Happy Birthday Melt and Pour Soap Recipes - Lisa Maliga
Introduction
––––––––
Do you know of someone that will be celebrating a birthday soon? Have you picked out a present for them? Are you a creative individual who enjoys making gifts for others? If so, now you can make memorable hand crafted gifts for friends and family. A gift that will be longer lasting than a birthday cake or cupcake – and just as nice looking! A gift that contains no calories! Handmade soaps are easy to make in an array of colors, shapes, and scents. Custom make a gift that will be remembered well after the celebrant’s birthday.
Best of all, the soap recipes you’ll read about in Happy Birthday Melt and Pour Soap Recipes are easy to make. They are also designed for all budgets and you may already have the molds and other ingredients available in your kitchen. While the main ingredient, melt and pour soap base, can be found in many crafts and hobbies stores, there are several online places where you can shop for your soap, fragrance, colorant, molds and labels and packaging. Additionally, you can find most of your packaging in discount stores and supermarkets.
Basic Information About Melt and Pour Soap
melt&poursoapbaseClear and White Melt and Pour Soap Base
As seen in the above photo, the two main types of melt and pour soap base are clear [translucent] and white [opaque].
Melt and pour soap base is premade and ready to use as-is. You can buy a small amount, cut off a piece, and use it to wash your hands. But that’s only the first step into creating wonderful looking bars [and other shapes!] of colorful and/or beautifully scented soap.
How do you find a good soap base? Always read the ingredients. In fact, I’ll be including them it this eBook and offering advice on what to look for in different types of soap base.
As with food, the ingredients listing on soap bases begin with the most prominent component listed first. For melt and pour glycerin soap base, the word GLYCERIN should be listed within the first two or three ingredients. If not, you might just not have a great product, or you may have a coconut soap base. There’s nothing wrong with coconut soap, it’s just a bit heavier than glycerin soap, and it’s not transparent.
The Myth About NO LYE Soap Crafting
The most common myth is that glycerin soap doesn’t contain lye. It does. ALL soap contains lye. Lye is mixed with fats and water and in the case of melt and pour, other clarifying ingredients such as sugar, alcohol, propylene glycol and sorbitol. The soapy fact is that once you work with glycerin soap base YOU don’t use any lye.
Not 100% Glycerin Soap
I’ve read of people who claim they use 100% glycerin soap. That’s impossible as it would be a jar of a clear, sticky plant-derived substance that’s devoid of lather and cleansing ability. Melt and pour soap contains 100% vegetable glycerin – an amount of approximately 20%. That quantity is enough to give it clarity and softness – as well as its shorter lifespan in the tub, sink or shower.
What About Melt and Pour Soap Bases from Crafts Stores?
In North America, there are some chain crafts stores like
