Bibliography
INTRODUCTION
This book introduces you to a groundbreaking, comprehensive system of face-to-face communication. You will learn to see
emotions and attitudes, personality and character traits by reading faces. My method links Chinese and European face reading and contemporary Western psychology. Use this guidebook to learn methods of close observation. I’ll guide you step by step as you learn to detect telltale glances, blinks, frowns and grins, and to interpret facial shapes, plus fixed and permanent expressions.
You will practice your new skills while moving through your daily life – driving a car, sitting on a bus, having a cup of coffee, shopping in a market or wandering through a mall.
You’ll observe ordinary people through brand-new lenses.
You’ll spot dramatic moments revealing a world hidden from public view.
The fog of humdrum daily events will lift.
You’ll read the minds
of your friends, family and colleagues by scanning the messages written on their faces.
You’ll become attentive, focused and less easily distracted.
You’ll learn to trust your intuitive decisions.
You’ll spot that instant when the client says no
but wants to say yes.
I’ve divided this book into sessions
with my co-author, Richard Lacey, Ed.D.
Make Learning Fun and Easy
I‘ve tested these exercises to provide hours of enjoyment. Each exercise reinforces one specific concept, but it doesn’t matter if your curiosity tempts you to duck out of line, skip ahead, and concentrate elsewhere.
As you acquire expertise, the whole range of concepts and methods blends into an integrated repertoire.
Dr. Lacey loves to watch poker and blitz chess games on New York City sidewalks, while I remain fascinated by artists drawing portraits and caricatures of tourists in Times Square. Neither of us can resist watching people on a crowded subway car or in a restaurant.
Are you a teacher? Do you train people? Are you in sales? Are you an avid poker or chess player? Perhaps you spend a lot of time and effort interacting with others. Whether those others are competitors, sales prospects, students, family members or clients, learning to read faces will enrich and broaden your experience.
Treat these exercises more like play than work.
Before long the process will seem easy, like riding a bicycle. And like learning to ride a bike, once you get the hang of it, you won’t fall off.
When you review the text, explanations will jump off the page. Sometimes a new skill or insight will amaze you.
What is the Body Language of the Face?
I am a professional caricature artist. I exaggerate features to convey unique personalities. Most of our communication consists of non-verbal body language.
