Practical Physiognomy A Critical Review
The term Physiognomy
is derived from three Greek words physic (nature) names (law) and gnomon (interpreter) and it means to know nature. According to physiognomy, the face is a signature of a person in flesh and bone. The art of face reading started in China before Confucius. Mr. Lavatory defines physiognomy as the Art or science of discerning the character of the mind from the features of the face or the art discovering the predominant temper or other characteristics of the mind but especially by external signs of the countenance or the combination of the features
.
Mr. Winkle man also says that the mind is invisible to those who understand don't the body of physiognomy
the body is the mirror of what you carry inside.
The History of Face Reading
Face readers started the art of face reading in China before Confucius. The oldest book on Face Reading was written by Gui GuTze, a Chinese philosopher who lived about 2500 years ago. Face reading became very popular in China since then. Physiognomy was also popular in ancient Greece. Aristotle also wrote a treatise on the subject named Physiogmomonica. The Arabian philosophers also showed their interest in this subject. Avicenna explained the art of face reading in his book De Animalibus in details. Albertus Magnus [c. 1200-1280] was the first scholar in the west to write a book on physiognomy. During the middle ages, physiognomy and palmistry were taught at university level.
Jerome Carden [1501-1576] and John Lvelyn, English scholars wrote on Physiognomy. So did other scholars such as Italian author Gian Battista, Johann Kaspar, a Swiss scholar. In the late 1930, the Japanese Air Force used face readers to study the faces of recruits. Famous scientist Charles Darwin [1808-1882] studied humans and apes and was surprised to find how both used facial expressions to express their emotions. His book‘The Expressions of the Emotions’ in man and animals threw much light on the subject. Other notable scholars in this field are Ray. Birdwhistell, Paul Eckman and others. Physiognomy continues to be popular in modern times. It is deeply related with Kinesics, the study of body movements including facial expressions. It was developed in the 1950s by Ray. L. Birdwhistell, an anthropologist. He published his first book on the subject - Introduction to Kinesics. Man’s character and emotions
are worth reading.
Anatomical Interpretations in Physiognomy: The forehead is the principal seat of reasoning and perspective qualities. Prominence of the lower part of the forehead an is indication of the desire to see the world in detail and to study the science and facts of the life as well. Fleshy and blunt foreheads display dull mind and poor understanding. Large and prominent eyes indicate power of expression. Deep seated eyes suggest farsightedness, oblique eyes are cunning. In men large nose indicates strong character and endurance but in woman, a large nose suggests aggressiveness and dominant character. A short, flat and upturned nose indicates weakness and dependent nature. A large mouth shows good character. A pointed and narrow chin indicates craftiness. The small and square chin denotes affectionate nature. Large ears denote generosity while small ears indicate greed for money. We also know that Nature has divided the face into three primary divisions. The upper zone runs from the hair line to just above the eyebrows. The forehead is related to reasoning and mathematical skills. The middle zone is from the eyebrows to the base of the nose which is concerned with mechanical skills and executive qualities. The lower zone extending from the base of the nose to the chin is related with moral valves and social qualities. If the upper zone is wide between the temples the person is intellectual and learned. If it is longest the person is logical and has good memory. And if it is short the person is absent-minded and illogical. If the middle zone is widest between the cheekbones the person is emotional in nature. If it is longest the man is confident. If it is short the man is oversensitive. Thus the face of the person tells much about him and his inner qualities.
Natural Division of Face
Nature has divided our face into three primary divisions. They are the nose, the eyes, and the mouth.
The Nose
It is represented by its height and size.
The size of the nose is controlled by quality is the measure of power. There are many variations of structure of the labial, laryngeal and nasal organs. The more developed the more clear and comprehensive and makes the person fluent in power of speaking. Some organs in feeble minded are very far from the normal standard size in form and size. As the nose and nostrils grow in size the lungs become larger and as such the respiration gives power for the movements. The nose is the proper entrance to the respiratory organ. The physiological uses of nose are many. It is mainly for breathing, inhaling and exhaling, scenting, warming the air, carrying the blood to the brain and assisting the general circulation of the blood.
The Eyes
The eyes are the most searching and accurate signals of all human communication. The eyes indicate the health. They also represent he muscular development of the body. Eyes also reveal quality of brain and nervous system. The two principal of the eye are sight and motion. The eye is both a physical and a mental organ. The eyes express mental powers. The eye is also the facial register of the muscular system of the entire body. The eye expresses the emotions rather than intellectual processes. The eyes and ears have arisen out of the nervous system. The eyes are considered as the mirror of the soul. The eyes being the indicator of the emotions are very important parts of our body. Thus the three natural divisions of the face are also related to the five systems of the body known as the vegetative, the thorscic, the muscular, the osseous, the brain and nervous systems. Women are more perceptual than men. Women have an innate ability to pick up and decipher non verbal signals and have accurate eye for all details. Women are far more alert in matter of face reading than men.
The Mouth
The mouth is in the centre of the face. it shows the conditions of the various organs and functions related to digestion, sensation excretion and reproduction. In analyzing a mouth there are certain indications which must be observed carefully. Lavater has given hints in the matter. He says six points must be observed such as [1] the two lips both upper and lowers limp separately. [2] the line which is the result of their junction [3] the centre of the upper lip. [4] the centre of the lower lip [5] the base of the middle line and finally
