    Chapter 1

    He shoots . . . he scores! I said in my head as I skated in a circle with my arms waving in the air. It was my second goal of the game! My teammates surrounded me, patting my helmet and punching my shoulder. I have never scored two goals in one game and my cheeks started to hurt from smiling so much. It was a great game and now we were up three goals to one.

    I made my way to the bench. It had been a fast shift and I was breathing hard. Coach Fred knocked on my helmet as he went past. Nice goal, Jones!

    Thanks, I said.

    My name is Jordy Jones and my team is called the Bears. Most of us have been together since the first grade. Back then our jerseys had teddy bears on them but now that we’re ten, they have fierce grizzly bears. My best friend Blair is on the team and our new friend Ryan plays with us too.

    I love playing hockey. I love to skate and my coach says that I’m one of the fastest players on the team. I can change from skating forward to backwards easily and dad says I can stop on a dime. I learned to skate so fast to keep ahead of the other players.  I like skating and scoring, I don’t like crashing and falling.

    I looked over at the other team’s bench. They are called the Cheetahs and their coach was yelling very loudly. We have played against them three times this season and they have won all three times. One of the players was staring back at me. His name is Ivan and he is a year older than
