Chapter One
The woman sitting in the café was as identifiable to Chester Lofton as any woman could possibly be; it had been almost two full decades since he had had close contact with her, but he could trace the familiar features of a young child in her face. His heart contracted in his chest as he thought of what he suspected about her—the danger she was in. In Chester’s mind, he saw a young child, precocious and vivid in her interests, beaming at him as he came into the house at the end of the day.
He closed his eyes for a moment, calling up all of the details he could recall. The tiny child he had known had grown up into a strikingly beautiful woman, almond brown with large, engaging eyes that looked over the café with a wariness that belied the easy smile she gave the barista as he took her order. For a long moment Chester felt an echo of grief that he hadn’t been around to see it happen—to see her development. He had watched her, had spied on her a few times over the years—particularly recently—but he had never seen the day-to-day changes that she had gone through, the slow but startling transformation from child to teenager to adult.
Chester’s guilt welled up inside of him and he opened his eyes, pushing it aside. The woman he watched was dressed stylishly, in high-end retail clothing: her jeans and t-shirt had the indefinable look of clothes that weren’t simply wash-and-wear, but which had had some thought and design put into them. Her small, nimble feet were concealed by a pair of boots, comfortably fit and only slightly worn—they must have been favorites of hers, Chester reasoned. The woman’s dark brown, curling hair fell to her shoulders, looking beautifully styled, meticulously treated. She wasn’t ostentatious, but there was a vibrancy to her, a visibility that belied her furtive glances around the café. Chester felt an echo of pain at the thought of the woman looking so scared—like a prey animal, uncertain if the predator was near. Chester shook his head. She was afraid, in the midst of a crowd, when he knew that an even deeper danger faced her in her home.
He knew he had to move towards her, that he finally had the opportunity to talk to her; he had to take it. For once she was without her bodyguard, without the minions that surrounded her in supposed security. Chester took a deep breath. The woman hadn’t seen him yet. He wrestled with his sense of responsibility; she would likely not want to talk to him at all—if she recognized him. He had been out of her life for so long, and he knew that it hadn’t been easy for her. If she knew who he was, she would not want to hear a word out of his mouth, and he had to admit he couldn’t entirely blame her for that. In the times that he had checked on her—the few occasions that he could take away from his greater, more dangerous life’s
