    Chapter One

Daniel paced in front of his desk slowly. Over the past few weeks, there had been murmurs about strange killings in the city, and the bloodless bodies had started to make headlines as the mystery of the day. It was troubling, but as of yet, no one was taking the joking references to vampires seriously.

Daniel had bigger troubles on his mind. The latest batch of serum was going very well—but thus far, his scientists had not managed to extend the life of the serum in the body of the taker; it broke down too rapidly to be of complete use. It was still an improvement on the original, but Daniel pushed for more. He knew he was opening up a can of worms that would be the cause of monumental upheaval in the community, but he had to assume that there were many vampires like him, who wanted the freedom to go out during the daytime without becoming a human torch.

The version of the serum that currently existed provided several hours to a day’s worth of protection to the vampire, depending on the age of the vampire. Daniel was pushing for up to a week of protection; even with modern travel, it wasn’t always convenient to have to take the serum daily and to avoid the brightest hours of the day. The less attention to themselves that the vampire community could manage to attract, the better they would be able to survive. But not everyone was interested in the serum—and Daniel had already gotten word that there were some in the community who were upset by his improvements.

The original serum had been looked at as a sort of parlor-trick—a way for vampires to briefly cover their status. Of course I’m not a vampire—look: I’ll walk out into the sun right now.

But some traditionalists had even disliked that, saying that it was their lot to avoid the sun, that it was their payment for the near-immortality they had achieved. The lines of disagreement hadn’t taken a firm hold, and Daniel had convinced some of his friends who he thought would be his staunchest detractors of the serum that it was a good thing. But every generation of the serum so far had improved it—and tensions were starting to mount.

Daniel decided that at the moment, worry would do him no good; after over 600 years of living, he had learned to be patient—and not to borrow trouble when it would come upon him of its own good time when it was ready.

It was time to return home, to see Tiffany. The thought gave him a smile. He made another decision as he collected his phone and looked around the enormous office to see if there was anything he had forgotten; he would stop off at Tiffany’s on his way, pick the woman he loved up something nice.

Tiffany was becoming more and more beautiful every day that she relaxed, Daniel thought as he walked into the famous jewelry store. As she blossomed, discarding her fear and insecurity, she was like a butterfly, emerging from its chrysalis, wings unfurled but only drying slowly in the sun. He wanted to feed her beauty, her enthusiasm, her new-found excitement in life; the haunted woman he had first encountered on the streets of New York had become a confident, witty, humorous person—willing to sass him back, to tease him about his musical tastes.

The night after she had finally broken the freeze on their relationship, kissing him and bringing the torrent of his desire to the forefront, Tiffany had taunted him about that new-age crap he listened to while they were in the car, on the way out of the city to an event in New Jersey. At first, Daniel’s taste had been insulted; he knew that baroque music, that renaissance music, was not to everyone’s taste—but it certainly wasn’t ‘crap,’ nor was it new age. But she had kissed him, saying that she knew there was no accounting for taste, but she had never been able to get into what she called chamber music.

So what do you listen to, then? Daniel had asked, taking the opportunity to trail his hands over her slim waist, feeling the heat of her body through the thin fabric of her dress. Tiffany had shrugged.

I listen to a little bit of everything—rock, pop, even a little country. But I really love rap, hip-hop, and R&B. That’s my soul, right there. Daniel had been intrigued. He was interested in music—had watched the progression of it over the centuries—but had never felt quite comfortable with what was termed rap and hip hop. It seemed too violent, bitterly angry—and deeply misogynistic. When he pointed that out, Tiffany had acknowledged that there were performers like that, but that pop and rock had just as many
