    Getting Started

ARE YOU STRUGGLING to get started selling on eBay? Are you wondering if you can really sell items, just by listing them on an online auction site? Would you like someone to hold your hand, and guide you through your first few listings?

This book can help you with all this and more.

I’ve been selling on eBay for eighteen years now. And, for five of those years I have made a full time living selling magazines and books through my eBay store.

Some years, I’ve made as much as $40,000 to $50,000.

Most years, when I do eBay part-time to supplement my regular gig, I still make $20,000 to $25,000. For most of us that is enough extra money to make the house payment, utilities, cable. You may even have enough money left over to drive a brand-new car every other year.

eBay has been a financial powerhouse for me. When I’m between jobs, I can step things up and make a full time living. When I want to slow it down, I pull back on my new listings. I put my eBay store on auto-pilot so all I need to do is mail out items as they sell.

What I want to do in this short guide is show you how you can set up an eBay business of your own.

Whether you want to make a few hundred dollars per month or build a robust eBay store that can make you several thousand dollars per month, I will give you all the information you need to make it happen.

I am going to walk you through setting up your eBay and PayPal accounts, and placing your first listings on eBay.  Then we will explore advanced selling strategies. We will look at different methods to help you increase your earnings.

Unlike other books about selling on eBay that drag on for 300 to 400 pages, I’ve kept this book short – under 150 pages.

Let’s face it, if you’re like most people you already have a full-time job. You don’t have time to read through a whole bunch of filler to find the few gems you need to get started.

Who am I, and why should you listen to me

    HEY THERE, NICK VULICH here.

If you’re like me, I’m sure you’re probably a little skeptical about taking advice from someone without knowing a bit about them first.

I have been selling on eBay since 1999. Most of my online customers know me as history-bytes. I’ve also operated as It’s Old News, Back Door Video, and Sports Card One.

I have completed almost 50,000 transactions on eBay for a total of over one million dollars in sales. I’ve taken a break from selling on eBay and Amazon to concentrate on my writing and coaching, but I keep my hat in the game— keeping in touch with sellers and reading the latest reports on e-commerce.

I have been an eBay Power Seller, or Top-Rated Seller, for most of the past fifteen years, which means I’ve paid my dues and met eBay’s rigid sales and customer satisfaction goals.

This is a rewrite of my second book, eBay Unleashed. It is by far my bestselling eBay guide but over time much of the information has become dated. eBay has changed directions during that time. So, have I. This book shares much of that information. I have revised and updated everything in the book, so you have access to the most current information available. Most of the information is evergreen. How to get started selling on eBay, how to post your first listing, and tips about how to be a better seller. The workshops cover specific topics in more detail—titles, item descriptions, pricing, international shipping and more. The final section includes outtakes from five of my previous books. Taken all together this book can take you from beginner to Top-Rated Seller in a short period of time.

Freaking Idiots Guide to Selling on eBay was aimed more towards how to get started selling on eBay. eBay Subject Matter Expert suggests a different approach to marketing on eBay – building a platform where customers recognize you as an expert in your niche and buy from you because of your knowledge in that field. Sell It Online gives a brief overview of how to sell on eBay, Amazon, Etsy, and Fiver. How to Make Money Selling Old Books & Magazines on eBay talks specifically about what I know best, how to sell books and periodicals on eBay.  eBay Bookkeeping Made Easy helps sellers understand how to keep track of the money they are making, and how to take advantage of the tax code to make even more money. eBay Shipping Simplified helps sellers determine the best way to ship their items, and how to use eBay’s shipping tools to make the task easier. It also has a primer on international shipping and using third-party shipping providers such as Stamps.com and Endicia.

eBay 2015 (also known as eBay Selling Advanced) is my longest book to date and encapsulates everything sellers need to know to start and grow their eBay business. eBay 2016 (also known as eBay Business Expert) takes a different approach—showing sellers how to increase sales by employing well thought-out social media marketing campaigns using Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and other sites. It also takes a close look at blogging for online sellers, and how to fund special projects using Kickstarter.

This book provides an overview of how to sell on eBay. At the back of the book, you will find five outtakes from some of my previous books—I guess you could call them my greatest hits. They contain valuable information you can use to help grow your eBay business. It should help to tie-up all the loose ends so that you can sell more successfully on eBay.

    Let’s get started.

    Deciding what to Sell

THE HARDEST THING FOR most people is deciding what they want to sell.

My suggestion is to start with everyday items you have around the house. If your family is anything like mine, you have plenty of extra stuff stashed away in every nook and cranny. My wife and kids have been planning a yard sale for five years now, and all that stuff is filling up the garage. The kids have old toys, unused video games, videos, and CDs everywhere.

Chances are many of those items are things other people want.

Look at a few of them, and then search for them on eBay. It’s going to amaze you how much people are willing to pay for some old books or CDs. Just because your kids upgraded their video game system doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t like to have that old game console. If you package it with five or ten games the deal becomes even sweeter.

Another advantage of starting out slow is it doesn’t require an upfront investment. You can test the waters for free and see for yourself if selling on eBay is something you would like to pursue.

I don’t know about you, but I work hard for my money. I don’t want to flush it down the toilet chasing some half-baked dream. That’s the cool thing about eBay. You can start out selling stuff you already have and post them for free using the free listings eBay gives you. Try getting McDonald’s to let you test drive a restaurant franchise with no money down.

    It’s not gonna happen.

eBay wins the cheapskate’s challenge hands down.
