I always thought I was a bit of a rebel until I met Martin. I'd run away from home, I'd like to say at sixteen like a real rebel, but actually at eighteen when one is supposed to be more or less a grown up anyway. All my girlfriends were going to places like the Greek islands and usually in couples or groups, so I decided to be different. I'd go to Hell and back, Hell being a village in Norway. It's actually south of the Arctic circle and I'd planned to go rather further but telling people I was going to Hell just appealed to me.

First off I took a Greyhound to Atlanta and flew to London, as a country girl six months in one of the world's greatest cities seemed like a good starting point. I'd found a house share online in a place called Acton, somewhere in West London with a couple of English girls not much older than me. Louisa said she'd meet me at Acton Town tube. I think she'd already decided I'd need some looking after. What's the tube? I'd e-mailed back, to find out it's a subway, the Brits call it the underground which has a nice ring to it I think; for as long as I could remember I'd wanted to be part of some underground movement, music, art, something trendy but Hicksville Tennessee didn't have much to offer.

One of the flight attendants on the flight actually wasn't gay! Wow, I'd thought it was necessary just to get an interview;
