I used to have quite a good job, well, very good really. It was well paid, the offices were smart and prestigious, I got on well with my colleagues, very well in some cases, it was fun and I found I was good at it. I was a personal assistant and got promoted over time to become PA to the company chief executive here in New York.

I can’t tell you his name, or that of the company, but it’s my view that if he’d been as good at his job as I was at mine we wouldn’t have got into the mess we did. It was all about show with him, we had to grow, and fast, and so virtually overnight he pretty much doubled the overheads with new premises and new staff without in any way increasing sales.
