Although I think of myself as American and live in Manhattan, in fact I have dual nationality and have spent a lot of time with my parents in England, especially growing up, and as a result I have quite a few friends there and visit often. My last visit was to an old friend Tina in a place called Cranbrook in Kent. The locals describe it as ‘The Garden Of England’.

It was a lovely vacation, but sadly Tina’s uncle passed away while I was there. Not having children of his own he’d made Tina a major beneficiary and the executor of his will, and so it fell to her to clear out his house. Naturally I helped. I think Tina was a bit embarrassed by a few of the things we found, she needn’t have been, as most of you will already know I’m a very broadminded girl.

We found some out of date condoms for example, well, he wasn’t a young man, the triumph of hope over experience Tina joked. Then we found his magazines ‘Men Only’, ‘Penthouse’, ‘Club’ and other titles, some going right back to the 1970s. Put them in the paper recycling will you please Tina had said, but I found them fascinating, not the modern ones. I’d seen plenty like that, glossy, glamorous, waxed and explicit women, hard core sex, nothing left to the imagination, but the older ones were social history in my book and I stashed three in my bag. They were all I could save, we were in Tina’s car and she had enough of a space problem already, plus I’d be flying back to NYC in a few days and I also had a space problem.

As
