    Mental Smoke - Cody Kirker

    MENTAL SMOKE

A Collection of Writings from Cody Kirker

    MY FIRST CIGARETTE

we stood in the parking lot

    outside the local taco joint

    my buddy Shane Blaring music

From his old beat up blue Plymouth

    those were the days

with my girl sitting on the trunk

leaning up against the back window

    in my sweatpants

    and her black leather jacket.

    finished with our food

    I watched this vegan beauty

take out a smoke and light it

inhaling as she studied the sky

    come here she said

pulling the front of my shirt

towards her and taking a drag

    she kisses me and shares

    her breath of smoke

    I take a step back

    and she hands me one

from her pack and lights it

I hit it hard and burn half the stick

she stares at me and says

    jeez kid

    SMOKE

Beauty is seen in everything even the ugly.

a lit cigarette glowing and with a flick the

ashes fall into the water sinking, disintegrating

leaving a trail of ash as it falls. Beautiful.

    AUTUMN SMOKE

    I stood outside

    By the shed and weeds

    I noticed a single bee

    Collecting its self

    On a flower or two

    Within the yellowing plants

    As fall approaches

    I watch and think

    so long, sir

    WINTER SMOKE

I step out onto my front porch at 4 A.M.

it's dark save for a single lamp post

    in the front yard enveloping

a rounded haze among the black

I light my cigarette and think

    that's me

    NIGHTLY SMOKE

I'm conditioned to an addictive inspiration

I walk with a click and light up the queen

and breathe her air, a menthol mental mint call

and I float thinking of guides above saluting Orion

I notice the end of my leash is burnt out

so I stop, turn and head back home

    WOMEN

    SMALL TOWN WOMEN

    Cigarettes

    are like small town women,

    Stupid

    But I enjoy them

    From time to time

    OLD FLING

    I see you...in that picture

you seem happy enveloped in red

I could only look for so long

and then I am filled with sad dread

you're so far...but close to me

confessions of old on my mind

I miss a girl with golden brown hair

only thoughts can turn back time

    I'm jealous...I worry about you

my finger tips on your soft little chin

beside ourselves in a small dark room

in the grass my lips meet yours with a grin

    a started portrait but
