Laying in the bed on her side, her body trembled. She was afraid to breathe, let alone move. How did this happen? Things were going so well, and soon, she found herself isolated from her family and her friends. Her body ached terribly. It felt as if one of her ribs were broken. Still, she waited patiently. She’d been doing research online and devised a safety plan. She was going to get herself out of this or die trying.

She felt him move around the bedroom. It was typical of him. He was getting ready for work. She hated him, hero by day, and monster at night. Feigning sleep, she wished that he would hurry and leave. She reminded herself that it was coming. No matter how many times she told herself it was coming, the sheer terror still immobilized her.

Grabbing a handful of her red hair, he yanked. Her eyes flew opened and she fought the scream threatening to spill from her lips.

Good girl, he said, pointing his service pistol at her. Tremors and chills shot down her spine when he opened her mouth, placing the head of the weapon in it.

Now, you know the rules. What happens in this house stays in this house. You are to go to work and to come straight home. Do you understand me?

She simply nodded her head, the terror careening through her body. Paralyzing her. He was so callous. This was an everyday routine, but the fear and terror was new; it never got old.

Good girl, he said, leaving her in their bedroom. She watched as he got into the police cruiser before driving off.

Running into the bathroom, she cried, the vomit burning its way up her throat and out of her mouth. If she didn’t make her move now, she never would and would have to endure it for the rest of her life. It scared her. At this point, suicide was a better option than this. She wanted to enjoy the blue sky again. She wanted to feel the sun’s rays. Most of all, she just wanted to be happy. To be content. Exhaling, she took out the track phone a co-worker brought for her. She dialed the number she saw online.
