We’d been driving for hours, across England, France and finally into Belgium. By the time we got to our hotel tempers were more than a little frayed.

Our first adventure together had started badly. Alex insisted he knew the way without listening to the SatNav but all the enforced ‘U’ turns when he finally admitted he was lost had begun to cause arguments.

He planned the trip in detail; I was happily along for the ride. He marked the map of all the places we were going to visit in advance and all I had to do was enter the details into the SatNav. He'd given me the map to help guide us, but it turns out he wasn't good at receiving directions from a woman or a machine.

By the time we got to our hotel we were ready for a break from each other. He went to check in while I sat in the car, wondering if we made the right choice, or if this would be the start of the end of our relationship.

Come on then. We can leave the car here. Let’s go have a look at our room. It sounded like the fresh air and short stroll had relaxed him a bit.

Ok, let’s go. I replied brightly.

We grabbed the bags from the car and walked to the hotel. As we stopped to cross the road he took hold of my hand and guided me the rest of the way.

We took the tiny lift up to the second floor; I followed him onto the landing and watched as he unlocked the door to our room. When the door opened I saw we had hit the hotel room jackpot.

Our room was Tudor style, painted white with dark wooden panels on the walls and a perfect view of the cathedral clock tower and market square.

The bed was huge and the room had so much space to move around in there was almost enough room to host a party. There were two small tables and chairs, and a wooden ledge wide enough to sit on running around half of the room.
