Prayers For Pets - Victor Brodt

    DEDICATION

To all of the people and pets we pray for daily, I love you with all my heart. To Facebook without which none of this would have been possible.-CSB

~In this world everything that lives eventually dies – from plants to animals to human beings. That is how it is, but that is not what God intended when He first created the Earth. God is a life-giving God, a powerful divine being who Himself lives and imparts life to others for His great joy and pleasure. Even though we humans messed the world up through our sin in the Garden of Eden, God had a better plan in mind. Sin causes pain, disease, and death – not only for humanity, but for all earthly creatures. Because of this reality, our pets may suffer for a time – and so may we; but there is hope. There is hope that we will one day be reunited with our pets. There is hope that we will one day be reunited with our God who loves both us and all of those whom we love. As the founders of Prayers for Pets, we pray because a loving God tells us to pray. We put our hope and our trust in Him here on earth. He will restore our hearts, heal our wounds, and make all things right one day, not just in animal heaven, not just in human heaven, but in Ha Shamayim (Hebrew: The Heavens)- the Heavens where man and beast will together love and serve God for eternity.

    Foreword by Victor Brodt

On November 29, 2011 Caren Brodt began a Facebook page called Prayers for Pets. This site has now in one way or another reached many thousands of people and pets. I thought it perhaps interesting and encouraging telling a bit of the background story. In 1987 Caren crashed, or to be more specific her body seemed to fall apart and totally fail. For over 25 years we have gone from doctor to doctor, seeking out specialists of all kinds. There were numerous diagnoses one being Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia, which at that time many believed was so hopeless that Dr. Jack Kevorkian put Fibromyalgia patients down. We as husband and wife could fully understand the total despair, but losing all hope is the saddest deception... It would not be until June of 2012 that we became aware that both of us actually had a set of dreaded diseases diagnosed under the broad heading of Lyme. Caren was just further along than I.

Somewhere at the outset I realized Caren needed contact with the outside world because she could not talk and could not travel well. She had been a singer at one time, but her voice would be virtually nonexistent for over 20 years. I set up a computer for her so she could reach out to the world beyond her grasp. She loved and hated to be on the computer; it was not all that easy. Unbeknownst to us it was Lyme that created the serious arthritic type of condition she has suffered in her arms, hands, neck and back. About half of the time her hands and arms were too sore to type, computer voice recognition did not work either; she had no voice. Sitting at a computer for any length of time was extremely painful, so when Caren told me she felt called to start a ministry like Prayers for Pets on Facebook, I nearly fell over. She would prove faithful to that calling despite the challenges.

Lyme is the worst imaginable disease; it causes all sorts of problems that range widely. Since PfP began Caren had her gall bladder removed, a heart attack, severe anorexia, and a kind of state that closely resembles a genuine Zombie. Yes sometimes we are real life Zombies but, usually we take turns and joke about the timing. On the off days we laugh at ourselves, together we change the rules of math 1+1=1/2! (We quip that between the two of us, we are equal to one half of a normal person.) Caren has remained a rock in spite of the circumstances. She is my friend, my bride of many years so I am a bit biased, but I have watched her faithfully keep up with the events and needs of so many, and pour out prayer and love through thick and thin. I am very proud of her; she deeply cares and lives a life much more full than most healthy people. She knows a secret, a mystery that makes life matter. She knows and shares first hand, the love of Jesus.

Whether we get retreads through medical treatment which seems somewhat hopeful; or the new bodies promised by the Lord, it does not really matter, there is hope in Jesus, forever hope.

Throughout the following pages there are stories of miracles and stories of struggles. We hope that through these stories you will see that the good Lord cares and understands. We are not alone.

You are not alone. Even if only a sparrow; God sees and cares for you.

Preface by Caren Brodt (aka: C.S. Case)

The Prayers for Pets Facebook page began as a labor of love on November 29, 2011. JacktheDog, PfP's sister page was the springboard which got the ball rolling. As a disabled person, I was and am mostly housebound. My husband began the JacktheDog page on Facebook in 2010 to coincide with the publication of our first book: Jack the Dog: And his Boy http://tinyurl.com/VictorBrodtBooks -Amazon link and http://tinyurl.com/CarenBrodtAMZ

    https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/27003

Victor took a job which required long hours; so I was tasked with growing the JacktheDog page. All of 2011 I worked hard teaching myself how to run a Facebook page. As a devout Christian pastor's wife my heart would break for the many difficult situations in the FB animal kingdom. By November of that year I knew that God wanted me to begin a page that was uncommercial, solely for the purpose of Uplifting Pets and Pet Parents/Fosters/Shelters as the page mission statement

    Page Opening Post:

Upon immersion in the sea of misery inflicted upon so many dogs, cats and other wee beasties, I realize that there is a great need for people to share their prayer requests with people who care and will pray for their needs. I want this to be a place where all pet parents/fosters are welcome to share imminent and long term prayer needs w/a community of caring prayer partners who WILL pray for them and their precious pets.

God has blessed the page and Victor and I along with it. My goal was to minister directly to people's and pet's needs as they arose. Posting prayers for people and pets has just been the tip of a very large iceberg. Much of the real ministry happens directly between me and the people who post their needs through personal contact with each one as they need prayer. Here are just a few of the many behind-the-scenes scenarios:

Donation of $100's to various fosters and shelters through the sale ofJack the Dog: And his Boy

Contacting 1,000's of people personally to check up on pets and humans

Fostering dozens of new Facebook pages, supporting their owners with counsel and prayer

Helping to rehome dozens of pets

Teaching those with lost pets how to organize a poster, then posting 100's of them

Rejoicing with many whose pets were found and mourning with those never found

Creating a video which has comforted 1,000's upon the loss of a pet, entitled:Pets, Animals, and Heavenhttp://tinyurl.com/Pets-Heaven-Video

Encouraging the community on the page to support one another and watching as that happens on countless occasions

Researching and sharing links for people in specific situations: kidney problems, cancer, Lyme Disease, injuries, etc.

Counseling members by FB messages, phone and email

    Answering theological questions

    Being a non-judgmental listening ear

We have supported and been supported by many Facebook pages: Twinki Gurl, Emmitt's Place, Noodle the Disabled Dachshund, Cocobean's Friends, Sparkys Story, Tatianna Queen of the Weiner Palace, Nazzy, Landon's Haven, Home Again Ohio, Mama Petunia, Maddox Miniature Pinscher Lost in Okc, The Forgotten Pet Advocates, Gremlin, Rainbow Bridge, Schultz (dog), Munster, Lost and Found Pets New Jersey, Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs, ... to name a few!

My greatest joy has been to watch the community minister to each other's needs. I see this on a daily basis. One person will post an urgent need, these will vary from needing to rehome a pet to emergency surgery, to a fatal diagnosis; the community often springs into action giving solid advice often making a new friend of the person in need to help them through their crisis. Many new and lasting friendships have been made among members of the PfP community.

I see PfP as a sort of church without walls. Victor and I are the pastors. We are very firmly grounded in our orthodox Christian faith. (Victor has a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School http://divinity.tiu.edu/) The page however, is inclusive to all. We welcome those of different denominations and no denominations, we are available to pray with people all over the world; many of whom believe in good thoughts instead of prayer. We take every prayer request seriously, whether or not people are praying to God as we understand Him. When there are those who have spiritual questions I am always happy to answer them from my experience of 30+ years in ministry. If I am stumped on a theological point, Victor will step in to help. We are able to reach people with the love of God in ways that a typical church never could. We are grateful to God for this opportunity to share the unconditional love of God we have known through this unorthodox style of ministry

Ephesians 6: 11- 17 (abridged) Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. …Stand firm then, with the belt of truth …,the breastplate of righteousness and feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The page has evolved during it's over two years of existence. For about a year and a half I would gather all of the daily requests and post them in a daily list digest. As the page grew, it became increasingly more difficult to continue this practice. It would take me three to four hours a day to compile the lists and type out prayers for each need. When I had a heart attack in August of 2013, this practice had to end entirely. Instead of posting requests, pictures and prayers once daily, I now post as I am able. The methods of delivery may continue to change, but the mission remains the same. I pray that I will be able to maintain the page and encourage the community it has created until I join all those who have gone before me at The Rainbow Bridge.*

    Introduction to the Stories:

It has been such a privilege to get to know the people and pets represented in the following stories. I hope that you will come to know and love them too. I am honored that they have put their confidence in me to guide them through some of the most difficult situations life has to offer. My goal in presenting these stories is to try to keep the writing style true to each personality who has offered them. I hope that their personalities come through to you as warmly and as beautifully as they have to me, and that you will share them with people you love when they face similar difficulties in their lives.

    Chapter 1 Bella

    Kimberlee

    Bella

Bella’s story began as a rescue. She was a precious Shih-Tzu mix that was found on a construction site. A matted ball of fur scared and abandoned. She was ordained by God to be loved by our joyfully crazy family. Shortly after we picked Bella up, we had to evacuate for hurricane Ike (2008), so the first few weeks of her life were in a hotel room with little chance for bonding mostly due to the devastation we were experiencing at the time, but it became very clear that I was her person. Her life was happy and full of love.

In April of 2013, Bella was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). I know it’s a mouthful, but this disease became our world literally overnight. The diagnosis of this condition is grave with a very high mortality rate. Basically, Bella’s body was fighting against her red blood cells and killing them off. I was devastated to say the least. Most dogs diagnosed with this disease do not make it past the initial two weeks. I started to pray. I found Prayers for Pets one night as I sat in a pool of tears. I needed prayer. Bella needed prayer. The PfP (Prayers for Pets) people wrapped us both in love and prayers. Caren was a constant source of peace. I knew without a doubt that these people that I did not even know were praying for her. It was comforting to say the very least. I believe in the power of prayer, and know that the power is increased when two or more are involved. As a family, we laid hands on Bella in her sickest moments, always believing in faith that we could beat this, despite the odds.

I constantly reached out to Prayers for Pets to report progress and failures. The words of comfort I found were immeasurable. In a difficult time, strangers had given me peace, lifted me and Bella up to the Lord. I will forever be grateful for a page that recognizes the love we have for our fur babies. During Bella’s treatment she was on high doses of steroids and a daily regimen of many drugs. It was a difficult time as we watched her struggle. I truly thought we would never have our old Bella back. I didn’t mind how she would be affected so much, as long as she was still with me. Prayer kept me going. We all know that some people just don’t understand the unconditional love of our animals. They steal our hearts. They become family.

Bella’s PVC levels had come up enough in June, and she was slowly weaned from all of her medications. It was a blessing, an answer to prayer. She had fought this fight along with Prayers for Pets, and she had won! It has taken many months, but that crazy ball of fur has returned to her pre-IMHA personality. Due to the steroids and a few seizures she had during her illness, Bella has recently lost her vision. When the Vet said she was totally blind, I lost my heart all over again. Of course, without a thought, I turned to Prayers for Pets. My little baby had been through so much. It hurt me to see her fight this monster disease, only for it to take her sight as well. The first few weeks were horrible. She was scared and lost. She was even a little depressed. We kept on praying.

Three months later, she has acclimated and regained her personality once again. Seriously, you wouldn’t even know she was blind. On a side note, I cannot even begin to explain the things that I have learned from a blind dog, but one thing stands out…TRUST! The same way that we trust in our Lord, she has trusted me. She is a constant reminder of having faith in a God who loves all things…great and small. I am filled with gratitude for Prayers for Pets. In my darkest hours I felt the prayers. The love of animals is found through this page and for that I will be forever grateful. We will continue to fight through prayer along with the page community for all the animals suffering in this world. Thank
