PrayerStarters for Dealing with Anger - Linus Mundy
Introduction
But it’s impossible to pray when I’m really angry or upset.
We may readily find ourselves saying something like this—if we use a limited definition of prayer. But if we expand our definition of prayer to include communicating whatever is in our hearts, there is room enough for angry prayers.
Lots of room. Because anger is part and parcel of every human being’s experience. And turning over our anger to God in prayer can be one of the most natural
(and healing) of all spiritual activities.
But first we have to admit that anger is OK and appropriate, of course—including anger at and with God. Many people find anger dangerous. Because so many religious traditions caution against inappropriate expressions of anger, some people mistakenly believe that simply having an angry feeling is sinful. They try never to be angry.
Oftentimes anger is more than an event or occasion; it is a state of mind, almost a way of life.
If you secretly are wondering if you are one of those angry men
or angry women,
you are not alone. There is much to be angry about in our world of too much competition, greed, and injustice. And even in our personal lives we often face chaos and calamity—and sometimes all this before breakfast!
My prayer is that this little book will help you recognize and express your anger well—whether your anger be occasional, event-oriented,
or something carried with you for too long. May you find the peace that may come from dealing with anger honestly, fairly, and wisely, with God at your side.
