PrayerStarters When You're Worried - Daniel Grippo
Introduction
What would we worry about if we didn’t have anything to worry about?
The humorous phrase points to a truth. Like breathing or eating, a certain amount of worrying seems to be built into the human condition.
Serious health concerns, natural disasters, financial setbacks, career choices, family and relationship problems—there are a number of serious matters we might legitimately worry about. Major crises bring a flood of concern, but they also focus us on very concrete and real problems. Therefore, our worrying can be seen to have a purpose and a focus, as long as we use it to work toward adjustments and solutions.
More often, we catch ourselves worrying about more mundane and everyday concerns. Will I make it to the post office in time? Why can’t I lose those five pounds? What if it rains during the picnic tomorrow? What should I wear tonight?
There seems to be a bit of the worrywart in each of us. And, like any habit, chronic worrying is hard to break out of. Fortunately, prayer and spirituality can help.
Unhealthy habits are most effectively dislodged when they are replaced with healthy ones. It is hoped that this small book will help you begin to replace the worrywart syndrome with a habit of turning to God in prayer and meditation during worrisome times.
