Zia Wesley
Zia’s path to writing historical fiction began in 1971 when she read an obscure, out of print book published in the UK about four European women who lived extraordinary lives in the Middle East during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One of those women was Aimée Dubucq de Rivery, an unknown cousin of the Empress Josephine. Zia became instantly fascinated by the young woman and began searching for more information. Very little existed. However, reading books about the Ottoman sultans and their Empire were equally fascinating and soon became staples in Zia’s literary repertoire. The desire to tell Aimée’s story haunted Zia for twenty-five years, throughout her entire career in the natural cosmetics industry. During that time she authored nine books on natural health and beauty and a few years after she retired in 1998, she finally began to write what would become The Veil and the Crown series: The Stolen Girl and The French Sultana.

Chapter 1
What You Want to Know About Skin
The skin is the largest organ of the body. Its most obvious function is to cover all of our other organs and muscles and to protect them from the invasion of bacteria and foreign matter. Yet the skin is a highly complex organ filled with sensors that communicate directly with the brain and other organs. It also eliminates toxic waste through sweat glands and pores and takes in oxygen, which is necessary for cell renewal, healthy tissue, and muscle and blood function. It hardly seems necessary to add that we would be unable to live without our skin. Yet the total disregard with which many people treat this organ leads me to believe that few are aware of this simple fact.
It is true that the skin's built-in repair mechanism will continue to function until the body dies, regardless of how badly it is treated or damaged. In other words, if the skin is hurt, it will heal. (It heals more slowly as we age, but nevertheless, it will heal.) However, this book is concerned not only with the health of the skin but with its beauty as well. And anything that is done to enhance or preserve that beauty will also help the skin to function better and longer. For example, skin that is not properly cleaned will develop pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. Yet these are symptoms—clogged pores that, in turn, indicate improper skin function. A pimple, blackhead, or whitehead represents trapped toxins that the body is unable to release, substances meant to be discharged which poison the body's tissues.
If a doctor told you that your liver was malfunctioning, the chances are you would at once seek out the necessary treatment or surgery, since we are all very much aware of the importance of liver function. But the truth is, we are dependent on every one of our organs; each is designed to perform a specific function, without which the body cannot live. The only difference between the skin and the internal organs is that the skin's sophisticated repair system allows us to continue living with incredible amounts of damage. Indeed, it is this durability that leads
