INTRODUCTION
Have you ever wondered why your skin reacts to even the smallest things? You take a mere glance at your face in the mirror and find your skin red, itchy, burning, and stinging. Well, that’s how our lives can feel daily when we have sensitive skin, isn’t it?
All these symptoms indicate that you probably deal with sensitive skin, just like many of us. Often, this skin type is mistaken for being acne-prone or having allergies and is hard to detect.
Of course, having sensitive skin makes it not-so-easy for us. There are several factors, such as certain climatic and environmental conditions, medications, and a few beauty products. There may be different skin reactions such as skin irritation, redness, inflammation, rashes, flakiness, and dryness. The extent of these, however, varies from one person to the other. Also, in several cases, sensitive skin appears to be thinner than normal skin. Hence, you need to take extra care of your delicate, sensitive skin
The term sensitive
might seem like a vague word, but it is a common characteristic of people with eczema and rosacea. This sensitivity is a lot affected by your genes, too. People with a lighter complexion are more likely to have skin sensitivity and irritation than the rest.
It's important to know how your skin's cells respond to understand your skin's reaction. When you have sensitive skin, your skin cells have difficulty retaining moisture as well as they should with a person with normal skin. Moisture loss makes skin more sensitive to products and causes it to dry out more quickly.
Your immune system may also contribute to the inflammation of certain conditions, such as rosacea, a chronic disease of the skin that is highly sensitive to a variety of environmental factors. Rosacea flare-ups can be triggered by sun exposure, hot weather, spicy foods, and of course, skincare products.
So, what do you do to treat and prevent skin sensitivity?
What products do you use to calm your skin down?
Inside this book, you will find the answers to all these questions and more. You will also learn how to make your own natural skincare products specifically formulated to combat sensitive skin.
No longer do you need to worry about what chemicals are being put onto your skin.
Each chapter of this book focuses on a different type of skincare product with multiple recipes. Moreover, every product adheres to a skincare routine you can follow for the best results.
We're gonna have so much fun creating recipes together! But make sure that you patch test each of these products before you use them on your face, so if you have any adverse reactions to one of the ingredients, you can catch it early.
ALL ABOUT SENSITIVE SKIN
What Is Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is often considered to be the one that simply gets irritated easily. There may be certain environmental factors or products that give you itchy, red skin, and sometimes, even breakouts. But before you give your skin the label of being sensitive,
know that sensitive skin can be a bit tricky to deal with. Sensitive skin isn't defined by a dermatologist's checklist. Observe your skin's reaction closely to determine your skin type.
However, if you have sensitive skin, your skin may show one or more of these symptoms. Here’s how you can determine if your skin is sensitive.
How to Know if You Have Sensitive Skin
1. Your Skin Reacts a Lot
When you have sensitive skin, you would probably notice that perfumes, soaps, fragrances, detergents, skincare, and even household products make your skin react in the form of dryness, itchiness, or redness. Your skin also flares up when it is exposed to sun, cold, and wind.
2. Your Skin Appears Red
When you have sensitive skin, your skin is bound to go through some amount of redness. This can be in the form of red bumps, rashes, flushing, blushing, and even dilated blood vessels. However, this redness usually fades away when the trigger or irritant is removed or by treating it carefully.
3. Your Skin Stays Dry
You’d be surprised to learn that dry skin and sensitive skin often coexist. This, in turn, leads to cracked skin and acne breakouts. If your skin is exposed to wind or cold, you are more likely to have dry skin problems. But the best way to combat it is to use a gentle moisturizer and keep your skin protected.
4. Your Skin Gets Rashes Often
Whenever sensitive skin is exposed to a trigger, it may develop a rash that looks bumpy, red, dry, or flaky. In particular, this is true for things like facial creams that you leave on your skin. As soon as you come into contact with it, you may get a rash. The discomfort, unsightliness, and stubbornness of rashes can be frustrating. A skin allergy, however, is more serious than a sensitive skin condition. Make sure that you can differentiate between a rash and an allergic reaction.
5. Your Skin Is Prone to Breakouts
Sensitive skin can cause small red bumps and pustules that look like acne. In some cases, acne washes and creams only worsen your breakouts.
6. You are Prone to Sunburns
You are more likely to suffer from sunburn if your skin is sensitive. Those with irritated or peeling skin are at an even greater risk. Make sure you wear sunscreen, especially on your face when you're outside. Look for sunscreens with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide since some ingredients can cause allergic reactions. Make sure the sunscreen you choose has an SPF of 30 or higher and is broad-spectrum.
7. You Have Itchy Skin
If you use products that are too harsh on your sensitive skin, it may feel itchy and tight. Hot water can aggravate it. Cold, dry air can make you itchy more easily. If you scratch your itch, you may cause further irritation and infection. Find out how to stop the itching by talking to your doctor.
