    INTRODUCTION

Did you know that your skin naturally produces oils to keep it moisturized?

Unfortunately, many of us produce way too much of this oil, which results in faces that look like glazed donuts.

I’m sure you’ve experienced this: You wash your face, but within a few hours, it starts to get greasy again!

Even worse, any makeup you put on either ends up looking cakey or it melts across your face.

There’s no doubt that oily skin is troublesome, but not all is lost. By following a good skincare routine with natural products, you can keep the excess oils at bay, while at the same time preventing acne, hydrating your skin, and keeping it healthy.

The skincare industry is loaded with products, so it can get a little tricky choosing what’s right for you, especially when it comes to products for oily skin that are natural and not loaded with chemicals.

That’s why I have written this book. In the following pages, you will find all my favorite recipes for creating your very own skincare products specifically designed for oily skin.

I’ve been suffering from oily skin ever since I was a teen, so I have tested hundreds of different products, formulations, and ingredients to find something that works. In the past, no matter what I tried, my skin always felt like a pool of oil. That’s when I started making my own skincare products.

The recipes in this book have been carefully tested and curated, with ingredients specifically chosen to target oily skin and related concerns.

Each chapter focuses on a different type of skincare product and shares multiple recipes. And every kind of product adheres to a skincare routine that you can follow to get maximum results.

I can’t wait for us to start this journey toward healthy, clean skin through natural recipes!

But before we dive into the recipes, it’s essential to understand what exactly we are dealing with, so be sure to read the first couple of chapters to learn all about oily skin.

    ALL ABOUT OILY SKIN

Dealing with oily skin and the problems that come with it can be daunting, but it’s not as bad as it seems.

There are plenty of things you can do to help, and we will get into them, but first, it is important to understand exactly what we are dealing with.

    What is Oily Skin?

Your face is covered in tiny open pores. These are sebaceous glands, and they produce natural oils known as sebum. At normal levels, sebum helps moisturize and protect your skin. It also keeps your hair healthy and shiny.

However, an overload of sebum leads to oily skin, which then causes clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.

    What Causes Sebum Overload?

Several factors can contribute to an overproduction of sebum.

    1. Genetics

It may seem surprising, but oily skin can run in the family. This is because large sebaceous glands that produce excessive oil (sebum) are hereditary.

So, if one or both of your parents have oily skin, and you do too, you may have inherited their large sebaceous glands.

    2. Enlarged pores

Having enlarged pores is another reason for oily skin. Your pores can stretch out and become larger due to factors such as fluctuations in your weight, age, and previous acne or breakouts. These bigger pores produce even more oil.

Fortunately, you can shrink these pores. It won’t happen overnight, but when you take care of your skin and follow a natural skincare routine—like the one outlined in this book—you can minimize their appearance and, in turn, make your skin appear less oily.

    3. Age

Oily skin doesn't necessarily disappear as we age, but our sebum production decreases with time. This is why older people often have dryer skin.

As the sebaceous glands slow down, the skin loses proteins, such as collagen. This lack of collagen and sebum is what causes fine lines and wrinkles to appear more prominently as we age.

One advantage of having oily skin is that as you get older, your skin doesn’t show signs of aging as much as people with other skin types.

    4. Hormonal changes

Oily skin and hormones are often correlated. The hormone androgen, which stimulates oil production, sometimes fluctuates, thus increasing the production of sebum.

Women usually experience this during puberty, just before they start menstruating, when they are pregnant, and during menopause

Illness and stress can also trigger the release of extra hormones, which results in more oil production.

    5. Not using your moisturizer

You might have heard that using moisturizer on oily skin is a sin, but that’s a myth!

If you are treating your acne with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, you need a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. When you don’t apply a moisturizer, any skin type will suffer from dry skin.

The key is to find the correct moisturizer according to your skin needs. In the coming chapters, we will learn about different moisturizer recipes that you can choose from to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

    6. Improper/unhealthy diet

Foods that contain dairy, refined sugar, and carbohydrates may be delicious, but if you eat too much of them it leads to overproduction of sebum, which, as you now know, leads to oily skin, acne, breakouts, and more.

    7. Overdoing your skincare routine

It may seem like a contradiction but washing your face or exfoliating your skin too often can contribute to oily skin.

While it is true that cleansers and exfoliators can be used to get rid of excessive oil, if you use them too frequently, your skin will be stripped of too much oil. This signals the sebaceous glands in your skin to go into emergency mode, and they will produce even more oil to compensate.

To prevent this, only wash your face
