About this ebook
Is there wonder in the dark?
Sometimes we have to venture into the night to see the glimmer of dawn. Sometimes we must journey beyond ourselves to observe the hovering hand of God.
Byron Leavitt fell ill in the fall of 2013 and was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. As he started his chemo therapy he began to write. He wrote of darkness and light, despair and hope, life and death. He chronicled his remarkable victories, and he catalogued his tragic defeats. But most of all, he wrote a story: one about falling into the abyss, and finding Someone there waiting to catch you.
This is that story. These are "The Cancer Diaries."

For my girls and my God, who always bring me through.
Hello.
(An Introduction)
It was in late 2013 that I became deeply, oppressively sick. When I reached the point where I could no longer function we went to the emergency room and spent the day before Christmas Eve undergoing a battery of tests. These tests led to a diagnosis some weeks later of stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
I went into treatment, and four months later the cancer was incredibly, miraculously gone. But that’s not where the journey ended.
In a nutshell that’s the gist of this little book. But you will find it’s also about peace, hope, courage, suffering, darkness and light, to name a few. It’s about never giving up. It’s about free will and destiny. And it’s about wonder. Wonder at the world we live in, and wonder at the God whose fingerprints we see stamped all over our everyday lives.
As I started down this road of brokenness and restoration I started writing. I posted these random thoughts online, and people seemed to identify with them. It is many of these writings that are collected here for you.
They are roughly halfway in chronological order and half not. For example, throughout the pages that follow you will see pieces of The Cancer Journal.
The Cancer Journal
was originally written one piece after the other near the end of this sequence, but it made sense to me to intersperse it throughout this book. Maybe you’ll agree. As much as possible, though, I tried to keep things as close to the timeline as I could, so you could see what I was thinking as life moved on.
After all, this is more than just a little bundle of tiny ponderings. This is a story. My story, in fact. But I hope that, as we journey on, you will find that it is your story, too. During our lives we will all venture into the darkness and the storm. Maybe you’re there already. The question, however, isn’t if we’re going in: the question is, will we find the light to guide us through once we’re there?
May this story shine that light for you. May it strengthen you in the dark days. And in the end, when the last page is flipped, may it make you wonder.
Your Friend,
Byron Leavitt

Part One
I don’t know exactly when the itching began. I do know, however, that it started inconspicuously as some mild irritation on my calves. My wife, Sarah, thought it was an allergic reaction to body wash, so we started cycling through all sorts of different soaps to get rid of it. Strangely, nothing seemed to work. The symptoms were pretty tame and thus largely ignored for
