NOT THAT KIND OF CANCER STORY
Hello, my name is Adele, and I had cancer. Breast, to be precise, my left. I’m here to tell you a bit of my story. And, as the title suggests, mine isn’t the typical cancer story; that’s usually from people well beyond my age, and quite doom ’n’ gloom. These stories gave me respect for those who came before me – and a whole lot of gratitude to those who fought for the treatment I was able to have – but they didn’t prepare me for cancer.
My story is a good-news cancer story. Not because I’m now cancer-free – which I am, whoop-whoop! – but because having cancer wasn’t all bad. And I still felt like me during treatment, despite the shite. Given one in three Kiwis will have cancer at some point, I figure that’s a pretty good message to pass on. And perhaps even knowing a little of my story will make it less scary if you’re ever in the same boat.
