    Foreword

Through the years it’s been my great good fortune to own many cat breeds and to know an equal number of others that lived with family or friends. It has always been a source of some amusement to me that the first Cornish Rex cat I met belonged to my elderly mother’s hairdresser.

When I would drive Mom to her appointment, I generally lingered a minute or two to speak to her friends at the beauty shop, which was as much a venue for a social gathering as a place for the coiffing of their grayed locks. One day the owner of the place asked me if I wanted to meet her new kitten.

Of course, the answer was yes. She brought out a box containing a tiny kitten with the biggest ears and most luminous eyes I had ever seen. The little thing seemed mismatched on the one hand, yet positively elegant on the other. The real showstopper, however, was her silky, curly coat, which the hairdresser happily explained to me was Marcelled. In fact, that’s why she adopted the kitten.

She told me that the hairstyling technique called Marcelling, which creates washboard rows of soft curls, was developed in 1872 and made use of the first curling irons or tongs. Showing me a picture in a reference book she said, See? The cat has the same hairstyle!

And indeed, the new little baby, christened Josephine after the 1920s era singer and dancer Josephine Baker (who wore her hair in Marcel waves) did seem to be sporting a perfect rendition of the famous style.

Over the coming months, I watched Josephine mature into a long, lean, elegant cat with a huge personality. She took over the running of the salon, delighting the clientele with her hijinks and happily playing fetch when the ladies tossed curlers for her to retrieve.

The cat’s irresistible personality was the genesis of my interest in the breed, which I think may well be one of the world’s premier companion cats. Not only are they social and affable, but they also require almost no grooming because their coats are too fragile to stand being brushed or combed.

I am also drawn to the fact that the breed was developed from a natural mutation and therefore retains its native good health and robust musculature. The first time you pick up a fully-grown Cornish Rex, you’ll be shocked by its dense heft.

Although quite capable of being self-entertaining, these cats do not enjoy being left on their own and can be demanding if they feel they’re not getting enough attention. If, however, you have the time and you want a cat that assumes to be center stage in your life, you’d be hard pressed to find a better candidate for the job than a Cornish Rex.

    Acknowledgments

I would like to dedicate this book to my very dear friend Isabel who has looked after all my beautiful cats when I have had to be away from home, for more years than I can care to remember. Her love and affection along with the way she has spoilt my boys and girls is something I deeply appreciate and makes the leaving so much easier. The peace of mind that gives me is so wonderful – thank you Isabel.

To my wonderful husband Nick, again thank you for all your assistance in helping me research and undertaking the dreaded proof reading. His observations and comments are as always invaluable and without his encouragement I would no doubt have given up on this venture a long time ago.

Just a note to say that I have written this book using American spelling as that is what I’m used to. I have given measurements in both feet and inches/pounds and ounces and also in metric. I have also given costs in US$ and GBP. Both the measurements and costs are approximate guides. I have done my best to ensure the
