    Foreword

My interest in cats with curly or rex coats actually began with the Cornish Rex and then extended to the Devon Rex. Genetically, they are a fascinating pair, each originating from a unique mutation. If you mate the two breeds, the kittens have straight coats. Although veritable next door neighbors in the United Kingdom where they originated, these are separate and special breeds.

Of the two, the Devon Rex is arguably the real odd ball. Early in my research I read that the best way to meet the Devon Rex was to throw away every preconceived notion about what a cat should look like. It’s good advice. Alternately described as elfin, pixyish, and alien, a Devon can take a little getting used to.

But once you get past the exaggerated features and unusual coat, and really spend some time with a Devon, you realize you’re in the presence of a powerhouse personality. My first real encounter with the breed’s larger than life way of being in the world involved a granola muffin.

I wanted to meet a Devon Rex, so my vet put me in contact with a local woman who raised the cats. She graciously invited me to her home for tea and a chance to spend some time with her Devons.

After the initial introductions, my hostess brought out a lovely tea service and a plate of warm granola muffins she’d just taken out of the oven. I reached for one, looking forward to biting into the freshly baked pastry when I was essentially mugged by one of the cats.

The furry felon launched himself into one of the most well executed horizontal dives I’ve ever seen, sailed past my nose, nabbed the muffin in mid-air and landed on the other side of the couch, swallowing his purloined treat before anyone could react.

My bemused new friend laughed and said, Well, you said you wanted to meet a Devon Rex. Now you have.

The famously prodigious Devon appetite is not confined to begging. They can and will resort to outright thievery in pursuit of a treat. I have since learned to guard my plate when in the presence of these cats and to ignore their doleful pleasing stares.

Within fifteen minutes, this same cat proceeded to launch himself onto my shoulder when I stood up from the couch to take a tour of the cattery. He rode there the entire time I walked around, offering gentle color commentary in my ear with a series of chirps and mews. I was in love.

Historically, the big cat breeds have been my favorites, but I also like cats with an advisory frame of mind. I like my feline companions to be present and interactive. That’s the Devon Rex and then some. I would not recommend this breed for anyone who is away from home for an extended period of time.

Devons don’t just have separation anxiety; they have separation misery. Since I work from home, my Devon is perfectly happy with the situation and gets along beautifully with my other cats. Their agreeable nature doesn’t just stop with humans. Devons get along well with other animals – even the ones some cats would regard as potential snacks, although I don’t take any risks.

I wish I could give you the kind of introduction to the breed that I received, but alas, you can’t pack a muffin-napping into the pages of a book. But I can assure you, that after learning about the breed and visiting some catteries on your own, you’re probably not going to be able to say no to a Devon Rex. They’re one of the most fascinating breeds I’ve run across in 40 years of being a dedicated cat lover.

    Acknowledgments

To my wonderful husband Nick, again thank you for all your assistance in helping me research and undertaking the dreaded proof reading. His observations and comments are as always invaluable and without his encouragement I would no doubt have given up on this venture a long time ago.

Just a note to say that I have written this book using American spelling as that is what I’m used to. I have given measurements in both feet and inches/pounds and ounces and also in metric. I have also given costs in US$ and GBP. Both the measurements and costs are approximate guides. I have done my best to ensure the accuracy of the information in this book as at the time of publication.
