    Foreword

Henley was a bicycle store cat. He also happened to be a Manx, a tailless breed from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. I met Henley during college. I was walking down the street on my way to the bookstore. He was sitting very prettily in the open door of the bike shop and trilled at me as I passed. Being a cat lover from way back, I answered . . . and so did Henley.

About the third time I went by, I walked into the store to meet the owner. Henley followed me to the counter, effortlessly levitating to the high surface with a burst of energy from his burly hindquarters. Got you, didn’t he? the owner grinned. It seems that Henley was very, very good for his business.

I didn’t buy a bike, but I did become a regular in the shop, which was part retail outlet and part gathering spot for folks who liked to talk. Well, folks and one conversational Manx cat. The proprietor, Stan, always had a pot of coffee going and a box of doughnuts tended to appear and thus attract hungry graduate students like myself.

Two things happened as a result of those years, I ultimately took up cycling, and I became a great lover of Manx cats. Henley was the perfect shop cat, adaptable and genial with strangers, but absolutely devoted to Stan. I only know of one mouse that dared try to invade the premises, and Henley dispatched the interloper with ruthless efficiency.

Stan lived in a small apartment above the bike shop, and Henley came and went through a dog flap in the door. He never, however, set one paw outside the shop. It is a peculiar trait of the Manx that they are . . . well . . . obedient.

You can tell a Manx not to do something, and he won’t. He will remember and obey the rules. There was absolutely nothing to prevent Henley from walking outside, but he never did because Stan told him no quite firmly the first time he tried, and that was that.

I think you will see, as you learn more about the Manx, that they are exceptional companions for many reasons. Although round and jovial in appearance, they are medium to small cats that require very little grooming (even the longhaired variety.)

Curious, funny, fun, and even a little mischievous by turns, the Manx is a wonderful cat. If, after learning more about these tailless beauties, you decide to welcome one into your life, you may well be spoiled for any other breed in the future.

    Acknowledgments

I would like to dedicate this book to my Mom and Dad, and to thank them for all they have done for me over the years. They loved me unconditionally and instilled in me an appreciation of life and nature that has influenced my outlook and approach to everything I do.

To my wonderful husband Nick, thank you again for all your help and assistance and for undertaking the dreaded proof reading. His observations and comments are as always invaluable and without his encouragement I don’t think I’d have ever started this enjoyable journey.

Just a note to say that I have written this book using American spelling as that is what I’m used to. I have given measurements in both feet and inches/pounds and ounces and also in metric. I have also given costs in US$ and GBP. Both the measurements and costs are approximate guides. I have done my best to ensure the accuracy of the information in this book as at the time of publication.
