Ellery The Adventure Begins - Nathan V. Brown
Introduction
Hi. My name’s Daniel. When I was quite a bit younger I had a bad habit of disrespecting nature, for example, carving my initials and other things on tree trunks and shooting at small animals with my pellet gun. But one day I had an experience that would change the way I looked at the great outdoors forever and I would like to share that experience with you.
It all started back in the summer of 1980, at the time I lived in a small town by the name of Eureka, Utah. It was the day after my thirteenth birthday. My parents had given me a brand new bike for my birthday. I decided to ride my bike up a nearby mountain trail where I normally went to look for snakes and lizards. I found and still to this day find the motion and feeding habits of reptiles fascinating to watch, even though snakes seem to make some people nervous. I also wanted to see how my new bike handled on the dirt trails.
I was riding up the dry dusty old mining trail that was about four feet wide and stretched along-side a very rocky mountain. Looking to the left, the mountain side extended high above the trail. Looking to the right, there was a very steep drop-off with lots of rocks, low-scraggly bushes and a few twisted trees. As I continued riding along I thought I heard a voice tell me to stop. I stopped and looked around but no one was there so I continued riding. I heard the voice again but this time it sounded like someone was right next to me. I stopped but again, no one was there.
I went a little farther; something about that voice left me with an uneasy feeling so I stopped. Just then, I heard a loud rumbling noise coming from the mountain side above me. I looked up to see a huge boulder rolling right at me. I was paralyzed with fear, but my guardian angel must have been watching out for me because the boulder took a bounce just before it got to me and flew right over my head.
I watched in disbelief as the massive rock rolled down the mountainside below destroying everything in its path. I looked up in the direction it came from and saw what looked like a small opening in the side of the mountain. I decided to get a closer look and began climbing up the steep incline to the opening.
As I got closer, sweat running down my face, I could see that it was a cave. When I reached the opening it was pitch black inside; I could not see anything. I decided to play it safe. I’d learned from Scouts training never to explore caves alone as they may contain hidden dangers.
I decided to go get my cousin Gabe. I
