Larry Roper
Larry and Betty Roper are co-authors and have been married over 50 years, and they love the outdoors. Larry has said that he looks at himself and he wonders what it is that makes him tick. He said to me, “How did I get this way? Was I born to be a hunter? Is it just because this is the way the twig was bent?” He grew up with a dad who worked hard, played hard, and took care of his family. His dad hunted, fished, and provided horses from the time he could remember. Larry played in sports in high school and it was there that he met Betty in his senior year. She was pretty and vivacious and would fish and hunt with him. Betty grew up in a home with two sisters. Her dad was a life-long railroad man who took good care of his family. They went on picnics and spent time swimming and playing sports. Betty was a drill team leader and earned a 4.0 GPA in high school and in college. Betty had a National Merit Scholarship award for full tuition for four years at the college of her choice. Larry and Betty dated for three years, then got married and continued to go to college together. It was during this time that they both began to live for the Lord and let Him guide them toward their future destiny. They finished college and Larry took a job as a conservation officer in Utah. They also began a family when their first child, Kristi, was born in 1962. A career change to the U.S. Forest Service came next, as did two more children, Lori in 1964 and Laren, Jr., in 1966. Restless for more knowledge and the leading of the Lord, Larry entered a master-of-science program in forest science at the University of Idaho. This led to wildlife research in Kremmling, Colorado, for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. After six years in Colorado, back to school to seminary was the marching orders for both Larry and Betty. They prepared themselves for the ministry and followed it up as missionaries with Send, International, in the Alaska Division. From there they took more training, and Larry obtained a Ph.D. in Christian counseling. They started a Christian counseling ministry in northwestern Colorado and eventually moved the ministry to Scottsbluff, Nebraska. They also lived on and farmed a 160-acre farm in the area. Along the way, they were active in many outdoor activities. They hunted, fished, showed horses, and raised dogs and quarter horses. Miscellaneous small farm livestock and 4H for the kids also were part of their experiences. Larry and Betty are now retired and wanted to share some of their experiences. They hope you enjoy reading about them as much as they have enjoyed living and writing about them. Check out their first book, “Fair Chase and Other Tales,” and of course share the word about this book, “True Tales of the Roper’s Escapades.”
