Justin: I’d always hoped to become an adventurer. Not that my school told me this was an available option, but after I kayaked from Australia to New Zealand in 2008 I realised there was this whole world of speaking, books and documentaries that could help sustain these insane journeys. In 2011, I skied to the South Pole and back over eighty-nine days, completely unsupported. But when I came back from that expedition I met Lauren, and my perspective started to change: I wanted to do trips with her instead.

Lauren: I could not be more different from Justin. I’m American and came over to Australia to do a masters degree twelve years ago. I’d always been the rule follower. In America, there’s a very specific track for success, and I had definitely hopped on that. My life had always been very well planned. The unknown terrified me. And then I met Justin and I found myself so attracted to that part of him. Not that I ever thought I’d do anything like this, though—I was very much a glamping
