    Introduction

It is inherent in our nature that we want be successful in life. Everyone wants to succeed in her professional as well as personal life. One always strives for possession, power, recognition and appreciation. In today’s world of competition, everyone wants to succeed and carve her own position in society. They set their own criteria for it. People spend their entire life to become successful. However, it is not always that everyone who wants to success will get success in her life. Many people end up being felt that they were unsuccessful in life and they couldn’t achieve what they craved for in life. This happens even after they put all their efforts and burnout all of their energy into it. If we look in the world how many people succeed in their life, we would find that hardly 5% people get success out of all who strive for it. These people achieve success from different dimensions of lifelike business, sports, art, music, scientific research, medicine and so on.

More than 95% of people who endeavor for success don’t become successful. They either compromise with what they’ve achieved so far or spend their life in frustration. Though it seems that they are living a happy and fulfilled life, nonetheless from deeper level they remain discontent. They might start to believe that successful people are lucky and they are destined to be successful. It is not that they don’t work hard to get success. Even if they work hard in their life, they don’t reach their destination. People start believing that if they don’t have success written in their destiny, they won’t become successful even after putting endless efforts. Is it really so? Is there any roadmap to success which can take every one to her destiny for sure? Can a person change her destiny if it is written in it that she would remain unsuccessful?

If you want to have answer of all these questions, design concrete road map for success and really want to taste success in your life, then this book is the way for you.

Before we proceed with any discussion on how to achieve success in life, first thing we should answer of some fundamental questions regarding success like what success is, why a person aspires for success in her life and how an individual feels achieving success, why only few people get success out of all who strive for success. If we don’t answer these questions, any discussion of achieving success would be superficial. Further, we want to devise a path of success which is fundamental, universal and easy to follow for everyone. If this path is understood and followed by any person, it is sure that he would get success in her life. He will live her life with fulfillment, contentment, satisfaction and happiness.

Now, if we want to devise such concrete path for success, we need to define what we mean by success. If everyone has different meaning of success in her mind, it is not possible to have consensus to devise one common path which can lead to definite success. If one doesn’t have clarity in her mind what success is, what things define success in her life, what makes her feel a successful person, no clear purpose or goal in mind which leads to success and if she changes her criteria for success very often; she rarely achieves success in her life. Therefore, before we proceed further, we need to define what success is.

To arrive at the definition of success which is satisfactory to all , which can cover dreams and visions of every person in the world and which can encompass all possible dimensions of human potential we need to go back in time and observe human behavior since primordial time. If we observe human life across entire spectrum of time, we might get puzzled which is one peculiar quality of a human being central to development of human beings since their birth on the planet? Which is the quality possessed by human beings because of which they have become much more psychologically advanced than any other species on the planet? What is that quality which is responsible for success, growth and evolution of the entire humanity?

The Human beings have existed on this planet since few millennia now. We have evolved as human beings from great apes. We as human beings have one peculiar quality which makes us different from other animals or life ever existed in nature. This is the quality of self-awareness. If you observe closely into nature you will realize that no other life other than human being possesses self-awareness. For example, if you observe animals in your surroundings, you will see that they cannot recognize themselves. Have you seen a sparrow in front of a mirror of a vehicle? What does it do in front of a mirror? It will hit its beak continuously on mirror believing there is someone else in mirror. She cannot recognize herself. Scientists have done many experiments and it has been proved that animals do not possess self-awareness. Animals do possess senses through which they can observe and interact with external world. Animals can feel hungry or feel pain; however, they cannot self-awareness. Some animals have senses which are sharper than ours through which they perceive external world. For example, a dog has a sense of smell which is much stronger than ours. A pet dog can smell and know that his owner is coming home while he is many meters away from home. An eyesight of an eagle is 4 to 8 times stronger than that of an average human. It is said an eagle to be able to spot a rabbit 2 miles away. However, they are not aware about themselves. Only human being is unique among all animals to possess this quality of self-awareness. A human child automatically develops this self-awareness after 2 to 3 three months of her birth. With this ability of self-awareness we have developed and grown so far since our birth on the planet. Process of evolution did not stop once humans came into existence. It is an eternal process in nature and human beings are also undergoing through this process of evolution. Since the time we are born on the earth, we have been evolving. Human brain evolved from primitive brain to most complex brain capable of thinking, analyzing, remembering and imagining. He was blessed by the quality self-awareness during evolution. It is this quality of brain which enabled human beings to grow and evolve on this planet.

    Needs and Desires:

Once humans received quality of self-awareness, they realized certain needs and desires arising in their mind. They became aware of these needs and desires. Therefore, they went on pursuing those needs and desires. This chase of needs and desires helped them to grow on the planet. They always got motivation from within to achieve things they craved for. Because this motivation they started putting efforts to fulfill those needs. Once they achieved things they desired and craved for, they felt contentment. The famous American psychologist Abraham Maslow studied number of people across different segments and geographies of the world and identified all types of needs that a human being can have in his entire life time. He found that all these needs can be segregated into various levels from basic to advance levels. Human being first encounter with needs from lower levels and once he satisfies those needs, he can desire things from upper level. These various needs and desires of human beings are as follows:

    1. Physiological needs- These are the basic needs of air, water, food, clothing and shelter. In other words, physiological needs are the needs for basic amenities of life. If these needs are not fulfilled a person will not aspire for higher level needs.

    2. Safety needs- Safety needs include physical, environmental and emotional safety and protection. For instance- Job security, financial security, protection from, family security, health security, etc.

Once physiological needs are fulfilled, one wants needs of safety to be fulfilled. People have goals in their life to have secure job or business and secure income, security for them and their family, healthy life for themselves etc.

    3. Social needs- Social needs include the need for love, affection, care, belongingness, and friendship.

Once one achieves security in her job and feels secured financially and physically, next level of needs which arises in a person are social needs. One craves for companionship, love and care. A person build relationships, make friends, get married because she wants to satisfy her social needs.

    4. Esteem needs- Esteem needs are generally of two types: 1. Internal esteem needs that are self- respect, confidence, competence, achievement and freedom. 2. External esteem needs that are recognition, power, status, attention and admiration.

Once a person accomplished her basic physical needs, security needs and social needs, he will crave for power and status in society. He yearns for appreciation, power, status, praise. We have seen many people who struggle to earn position and power in their life. People want to become better than others; they desire to possess something unique which no one else has in her society. People want to become special and extra-ordinary in their life. Sometimes we see that though basic needs are fulfilled, people still crave for more possessions like money, house, gazettes etc. It is not because their basic needs are not fulfilled but because they want to become unique and extra-ordinary in society. They want to satisfy their esteem needs.

    5. Self-actualization need- This include the urge to become what you are capable of becoming and what you have the potential to become. It includes the need for growth and self-contentment. Self-actualization, according to Maslow, represents growth of an individual towards fulfillment of the highest needs; those for meaning in life, in particular. It also includes desire for gaining more knowledge, social- service, creativity and being aesthetic.

Every desire of a person falls into any of these levels of needs. If you think of any of your desire in your life, your aspirations and wishes you want to fulfill in your life and list down all of them, each of them will fall under any of the above levels of needs. It is not necessary that an individual can have needs of one particular level only at one point of time and cannot have needs of another level. It might be possible that an individual has needs which fall into more than one category of needs. However, a particular category will be dominating among all types of needs.

A person might have needs of different levels at same time like to get a good and secured job, nice and lovable spouse, possessions like money, luxurious car or bungalow, power, position, respect, want to become an artist, musician, actor or sports person.

This is the hierarchy of needs which entire humanity has been following in the world. By pursuing and accomplishing these levels of needs human beings have created their own world in the world created by nature or GOD. We all have our own world in which we are living in this external world. We have our own possessions, relationships, society, problems and resolutions, joy and sorrows. By fulfilling our needs and desire, we all have made our unique world in which we live.

Human beings has inner drive and motivation within them to fulfill these needs. This drive or motivation has helped humanity to initiate and endure struggle for fulfilling their needs and aspirations. This has made possible for entire humanity to grow and evolve on the planet. We know that life came into existence by evolving from matter and continued its journey of evolution from very simple structure of one cell amoeba. It went through a long chain of evolutionary rungs and transformed into various kinds of structures of life including the most complex and mysterious structure – a human brain. Evolution did not stop even after humans were born on the earth. Humans have also been evolving on the planet since their birth. They have been continuously evolving on the planet by having different kinds of needs and aspirations and pursuing and fulfilling them. A person navigates through a chain of needs hierarchy and evolves in her life. For instance, primitive human beings were eating raw foods and staying in jungle. They evolved and find methods of preparing healthy foods and find shelter for them. As time went by, they form social group, communities and made infrastructure of villages and cities. They continued evolving and find many innovations like transportation, communication, power etc. to fulfill their various needs and aspirations. All these have made our life easy and comfortable. Our journey of evolution is still enduring.

    Mystery of Success

Once we saw different kinds of needs and desires of a human being, let’s define success. What is success for an individual?

Success is an accomplishment of a goal or an objective which an individual is aspiring for. Such a goal or object falls in hierarchy of needs we discussed in the earlier chapter. Success is subjective in nature and an individual’s perception of being successful depends upon the degree to which her goals are fulfilled. Once a person accomplishes her goals of a particular level, he feels contented and successful that particular level. Then, a new set of desires and aspirations of next level arises in a person. She again pursues for this new set of goals and objectives. This continues across different levels of needs. At every level, when a person accomplishes her goals or needs or desires she gets feeling of success.

Thus, we can call success a journey. A journey towards fulfillment of goals and objectives across different levels of needs hierarchy. It is about fulfilling any kind of needs across needs hierarchy. It can be of fulfilling basic needs like food or shelter, or need of having companion in life, or earning a power or position, or serving others in the society, or making a beautiful piece of music or art. Once a person fulfills one set of her needs, a new set arises in her mind and the journey continuous. When a person set her goals and objectives in her journey of success she should ask few questions to herself. What are her needs and aspires? What is that she wants which makes her life fulfilled? What success means to
