Home of William & Jo Harris
Town of Black Hills, West Virginia
The morning was like every other morning, nice and cool. When the wind would blow, you could smell the crisp morning air and hear the birds chirping away. William rolled over to sit up in his bed, as he did that he thought he heard a noise coming from down the hall. He sat there for a minute and tried to make out the noise he just heard. Next thing he knows, footsteps are coming up the hall towards the master bedroom. As he starts towards the door, tip toeing careful not to make a noise, his wife Jo opens the door and hits him in the nose. William, I am sorry, I did not mean to hit you with the door
. Jo said as she was walking over to check out her husband’s nose to see if it was bleeding. Jo asked, Why were you tip toeing in the first place Hun?
William said, I was trying to see who was coming down the hall.
William looked at his wife and noticed that she was wearing her apron and that it had flour all over it. Jo notice that William was looking at her funny and told him if he wanted breakfast before work that he better go get dressed and get to the kitchen. William complied with his wife whom he knew was right, that he had to hurry and get dressed if he wanted to eat what his wife had made him.
Jo was in the kitchen setting the table for her husband and her for breakfast. Jo was always cooking, always making something whether it was baking cakes or pies to dinners to feed William and his mining buddies. Jo did not mind cooking for her husband’s friends, she quite enjoyed it actually. There were things her husband did not know though and was afraid to tell him. No one really knew her secret, only her mom and sisters did. She would have been killed for what she practiced, especially it being the 1960s. As long as she can remember, she has been practicing. She even once asked her mom why they did and how long her family has been doing this. Her mom just told her as long as her family has been in the states. What could her secret be that no one could know or her life would end?
Jo has been living with this family secret for all of her life. Her mom used to call it a gift and told Jo to be proud of what you have. Jo was in fact proud of what she believed and practiced. She wouldn’t have it any other way or so she always thought. She has always had dreams that seemed to come true. Not all of her dreams would but the most important ones, the ones that taught you a lesson whether you wanted to learn or not. Jo wanted to tell William about her family secret but was told if she did she would be shunned and never allowed to be part of the family ever again. At this point in her life and after the dream from last night, she did not care. The man she loved and gave her full self and love to was about to be in danger and there was nothing she could do to save him.
As William was walking down the hall, he could smell the freshly cooked bacon and sausage, the home made biscuits too. As he approached the kitchen door he stopped, he saw the woman he loved still covered in flour and standing at the counter lost in her thoughts. He was even able to walk right up to her and touch her arm before she even noticed his presence. Jo, are you ok? You look worried about something.
What, huh, yes dear I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?
William knew when to press for an answer. Right now was not that time. He knew she would eventually tell him when she was ready. She never keep any secrets form him and he from her. Only if he knew the one secret she has keep from him the past twenty years, how would he feel about her then? They sit down for breakfast without a word. Jo pours his coffee and milk for him and her just a glass of whole milk.
Just before he was ready to leave for work Jo looked at him like she never had before. Looking into those big hazel eyes that he loved so much that if they caught the light just right, you would swear she had two jade marbles for eyes. That look sent shivers all through his body that went down to the very core for him. Before he could speak, Jo started to say something. William is there any way you could call in sick this morning? I mean do they really need you there?
In all the twenty years that they have been married, Jo never asked him not to go to work. He knew then that something was really bothering her, not like what to wear for a dinner party or even what to get him for his birthday. He has never seen his beautiful wife this worried or having this look in her eye like he was never coming home. Finally William spoke, I have to dear, and I have to get ready for inspection tomorrow. If I didn’t have to go I would not.
Jo looked at her husband and nodded.
William went to the counter to grab his lunch bucket and thermos, when he did Jo grabbed him and gave him the longest, sweetest, and most passionate kiss he has ever had. If he didn’t have to leave for work he would have taken her to their bed and made sweet love like never before. He wished she would kiss him like this every day for the rest of their lives; he would do anything she wanted just as long as she held him just like this. In that moment, William almost decided not to leave the house and spend the day with Jo, worshiping her, her caressing him like they did when they first had; that moment on their wedding night only twenty years ago. They were only sixteen and seventeen at the time of their wedding. When their kiss was done, Jo looked at him and said Tap your light and I love you.
He looked at her and told her that they would continue this when
