Somewhere in a small town in up-state New York are a librarian and a second grade teacher to whom I owe my life. That might be a touch dramatic, but it’s nevertheless one hundred percent true.Because they taught me the joy of reading, of escaping into worlds crafted of words.Have you ever been nine years old and sure of nothing so much as that you don’t belong? Looked at the world from behind glasses, and wondered why you don’t fit? Then turn the page and see... there you are, running from Injun Joe in a dark graveyard; there you are fencing with Athos; there you are...beneath the deep blue sea- marveling at exotic creatures with Captain Nemo.I found myself between the pages of books, and that is why I write now, it’s why I taught English and literature for so many years, and it’s why my house contains more pounds of books than furniture. If I’d had my way, I’d have been a fencer...or a starship captain, or a lawyer, or a detective solving crimes. But instead, I am a writer, and that’s the best thing in the world to be if you ask me, because as a writer, I can be all those things and more.If I hadn’t learned to value the stories between the pages, who knows what would have happened? Certainly not college...teaching...or writing.

In From the Cold #3
Chapter One
In a sudden burst of speed, Finn left the path and darted through the woods, following a trail he knew well but seldom used. His calves screamed at him to stop, his breath came with forced regularity, heavy. Sweat beaded on his brow and dripped down, soaking the headband that kept his blond hair out of his eyes.
"Faen," he cursed. Ahead was his destination, looming larger and larger with each step as his feet pounded the ground, trampling tender leaves and grass, crushing life under his feet just as Godzilla crushed New York.
He halted just under the branches, fury still burning in his veins, and glared up at the faintest hint of a camouflage jacket. What? Nothing to say to me?
Whispery noises that could have been wind, but weren't, came from above.
Impatience boiled over, and he leaned forward, stretching his calves, bracing himself with one hand on the tree trunk. "That's all right. We've only known each other, what? Twelve years? There's no actual reason why we should talk to each other, is there? Not when there's complete jaevla strangers down at the lodge who'll talk to either of us, huh?"
The rushing and rustling from above ended with a near silent thump as the man he harangued landed in a partial crouch in front of him. Finn shoved down the guilt that ate at his soul and deliberately tightened his mouth. He stared at Rowe, the man he'd considered one of his best friends for nearly a decade. He hadn't been able to believe what he'd seen at the lodge the week before—Rowe, the man who never left his cabin, chatting with people. Chatting. Making small talk and cooing at babies. "I don't even jaevla know you, do I?"
Rowe flinched and the guilt dam broke and Finn nearly shook with it as it washed over him. I’m…
Stupid?
Rowe's husky comment didn't surprise him.
Yeah. And sorry.
Finn reached into his fanny pack and pulled out a packet of coffee. I didn't come here to yell at you. I brought coffee.
He held it out to Rowe. As you see, it's in a vacuum sealed, unopened, untampered with package. Would you care to join me in a cup?
He found himself holding his breath in the early morning light as Rowe stood silently, staring at the package. He didn't think he could handle another rejection, not after Cannon had stomped on his ego so thoroughly the last month. His original plan had been to demand an explanation, but it didn't take a calm head to understand that he had no right to demand any such thing, and Finn was intelligent enough to realize that demanding anything at all of Rowen would be a terrible mistake.
Rowen sighed, a deep heart-wrenching sound that made Finn feel even more of a heel than he had previously. I'm really, really sorry for that.
Gud, he
