Somewhere in a small town in up-state New York are a librarian and a second grade teacher to whom I owe my life. That might be a touch dramatic, but it's nevertheless one hundred percent true. Because they taught me the joy of reading, of escaping into worlds crafted of words. Have you ever been nine years old and sure of nothing so much as that you don't belong? Looked at the world from behind glasses, and wondered why you don't fit? Then turn the page and see… there you are, running from Injun Joe in a dark graveyard; there you are fencing with Athos; there you are…beneath the deep blue sea- marveling at exotic creatures with Captain Nemo. I found myself between the pages of books, and that is why I write now, it's why I taught English and literature for so many years, and it's why my house contains more pounds of books than furniture. If I'd had my way, I'd have been a fencer…or a starship captain, or a lawyer, or a detective solving crimes. But instead, I am a writer, and that's the best thing in the world to be if you ask me, because as a writer, I can be all those things and more. If I hadn't learned to value the stories between the pages, who knows what would have happened? Certainly not college…teaching…or writing.

Under the Pier
Exuberant smiles and indulgent glances were in abundance as Mitch strolled through the crowds of people, searching for a familiar anything to tell him he'd found his man. Sloan had said he'd be here this afternoon, that if Mitch found him, recognized him, he'd say yes to the question Mitch had asked him on Thursday. Though he strove to appear casual, he knew he was anything but. The slight dampness of his palms owed little to the unseasonal heat of the day. He kept wiping them on his black and white hibiscus print board shorts. The sparkling water cresting in frothy waves tempted him to dash down and take a quick swim, just to cool off. But he had a mission, and a time limit.
Sloan's game had seemed silly to Mitch, but Sloan was something he took very seriously. So he'd decided to play along with Sloan's treasure hunt idea. His senses were on high alert. Sloan hadn't given him any clues, just a location. The intent expression on his face when he'd issued his challenge had told Mitch it was important to him. They hadn't been dating long, or even dating really, just meeting for coffee, chatting in the student union, or the library. Asking Sloan to be his Valentine may have pushed the parameters of their relationship farther, faster than acceptable. He'd accept any opportunity to make his dreams come true with regards to Sloan, even if it meant embarrassing himself by eyeing complete strangers speculatively.
So far, his heart raced every time he caught a glimpse of shoulder length wavy hair, or heard a slightly husky laugh that rang familiarly in his ears. But he hadn't found Sloan. The pier was crowded, it was a bright and sunny Saturday and the populace of Huntington and the surrounding towns appeared determined to enjoy it at the pier. In addition to the usual gangs of teenagers, joggers, and walkers, couples celebrating Valentine's Day late, clung to each other, arm in arm on the crowded boardwalk. He must have passed a dozen aw, isn't that sweet moments just walking up from his car.
In the end, Sloan's laugh drew his attention, just as it had the first time he'd met Sloan, in the library at the university. Then he'd been drawn to the table where Sloan sorted books and tapped away on his laptop. Now, he darted across the street in the wake of the skateboarders and roller-bladers to the Ice Creamery. His attention narrowed, focused as he skimmed the group waiting to place their orders.
At the front of the line, he caught a glimpse of a familiar head, and brushed off the complaints as he made his way to the front. Slipping his hands into his pockets, he leaned back against the counter, studied the man he'd come here to meet. This wasn't Sloan of the library, in his button down shirt and neat khakis, or Sloan of the coffee shop in his quirky T-shirt and soft faded jeans. This was an entirely different Sloan, an incredibly sexy, slightly intimidating Sloan.
Wow. You look fantastic.
He took in gleaming brown waves of hair, the golden skin of a long time California resident, not like his own pale northern skin. Sloan wore a hint of make-up. His lashes curled thick and dark against his cheeks as he coyly lowered his lids. Some slick shiny stuff on his lips teased Mitch to lick it off.
Their gazes locked, and a familiar tide of heat swept through Mitch. The heated green gaze hinted at a reciprocated feeling from Sloan. Sloan's eyelids drifted shut, breaking contact, and when they raised again, all traces of that passionate glance were hidden in depths made mysterious by bold black liner and a smudge of green powder.
Sloan accepted a crisp sugar cookie cone with a swirl of vanilla ice cream sprinkled liberally with gaudily colored gummy bears from the clerk, and Mitch hastily pulled a crumpled twenty from his pocket to cover it. He contemplated the disgustingly sweet looking treat in repulsion.
Hey, I got it.
Sloan protested, shoving his own bill at the clerk, who stared at them through narrowed eyes, lip curled in an impatient sneer.
No. You're my date, I pay. My momma raised me right.
Mitch lifted a brow in challenge. He waved the bill at the clerk who took it and made change swiftly.
I'm not your date.
Sloan brought the cone to
