• ⅛ yard black batik
• ⅜ yard medium blue batik 1
• ⅜ yard medium blue batik 2
• ⅝ yard dark blue batik 1
• 2 yards dark blue batik 2
• 2⅝ yards light blue batik
• Backing to size
• Batting to size
• Thread
• Black embroidery floss
• 1¼ yards fusible web
• Basic sewing tools and supplies
Cutting
Prepare templates for appliqué shapes using patterns given in the pattern insert.
From black batik:
• Cut butterfly bodies as per pattern and instructions.
From medium blue batik 1:
• Cut 5 (2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut into 20 (2 x 2½
) B rectangles and 20 (2 x 5½
) C rectangles.
From medium blue batik 2:
• Cut butterfly upper wings as per pattern and instructions.
From dark blue batik 1:
• Cut 8 (2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut into 20 (2 x 5½
) D rectangles and 20 (2 x 8½
) E rectangles.
From dark blue batik 2:
• Cut butterfly lower wings as per pattern and instructions.
• Cut 13 (1½" by fabric width) G strips.
• Cut 6 (2½" by fabric width) K/L strips.
• Cut 6 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.
From light blue batik:
• Cut 1 (2½" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut into 10 (2½") A squares.
• Cut 3 (8½" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut into 10 (8½") F squares.
• Cut 30 (1" by fabric width) H strips.
Subcut 4 strips into 60 (1 x 2½
) H2 segments. Set aside remaining 26 strips for H-G-H strip sets.
• Cut 11 (2" by fabric width) I/J/M/N strips.

Completing the Courthouse Steps Blocks
1. To complete one Courthouse Steps block, select one A square and two each B, C, D and E rectangles.
2. Sew B to opposite sides of A referring to Figure 1; press seams toward B.

3. Add D to the top and bottom of the A-B unit referring to Figure 2; press seams toward D.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with C and then E pieces referring to Figure 3 to complete one block; press seams toward C and E pieces.

5. Repeat steps 1–4 to complete a total of 10 Courthouse Steps blocks.
Completing the Butterfly Blocks
1. Trace butterfly shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web leaving at least ¼" between shapes referring to patterns for number to cut. Reverse the lower wing pattern as directed, referring to Figure 4.

2. Cut out shapes, leaving a margin around each one.
3. Fuse shapes to the wrong side of fabrics as directed on pieces for color. Cut out shapes on traced lines; remove paper backing.
4. Fold and crease each F square horizontally and vertically to mark the centers.
5. To complete one Butterfly block, center and layer one butterfly motif on a creased F square in numerical order referring to pattern; fuse in place when satisfied with positioning.
6. Using black all-purpose thread and a machine buttonhole or blanket stitch, stitch around each shape.
7. Transfer antennae lines above the butterfly body using the water-erasable marker.
8. Using 2 strands of black embroidery floss and a chain stitch, stitch
