Oh good, Zeke. You’re dead,
my little sister, Mia, said.
I sat slumped on the couch. I had just been killed by a hairy mutant in my Morbid Monster video game. I had fought off tiger-bats, shrieking mummies, and six sets of giant, chomping fangs. It was great.
Mia grabbed the remote control. "Now that you’re dead, it’s my turn for the TV. I want to watch the Princess Sing-Along show."
My older sister, Alexa, looked up from her Totally Cute Boys magazine. She said, "After Princess Sing-Along, I want to watch The Real Lives of Extremely Rich and Nasty Teen Girls. It’s my favorite show. Mimsy and her friend Maisy already have matching motorboats and sports cars. On this week’s show, they’ll shop for airplanes."
I didn’t want to watch the Princess Sing-Along show or The Real Lives of Extremely Rich and Nasty Teen Girls, so I walked into the kitchen.
Mom was washing dishes. She said, Zeke, you’ll be nine years old soon. We need to plan your birthday party.
When I turn nine, I’ll be more mature. I should get a later bedtime and a bigger allowance,
I said.
You’re right. You will be more mature,
Mom said.
I smiled. I’d use my extra allowance money to buy video games. With my new bedtime, I’d stay up late playing video games.
That doesn’t mean you’ll get a later bedtime or a bigger allowance. But when you’re a mature nine-year-old, you’ll be able to do more chores,
Mom said as she scrubbed a frying pan.
I frowned and went back into the living room.
Mia turned the channel on the TV. The Princess Sing-Along show was starting. Princess Sing-Along said, Hello, dear friends. Let’s get started on a super-duper song.
Ugh. I put my hands over my ears. But I still heard Princess Sing-Along’s awful song: Eat lots of healthy food that’s green, la la la. Veggies, not your boogers, I mean, la la la.
Zeke, you should have a Princess Sing-Along birthday party,
Mia said.
No, thanks.
I would rather spend my birthday alone.
You could play Pin the Skirt on the Princess and eat pretty, pink cupcakes and give your guests sparkly necklaces.
No, thanks.
I would rather spend my birthday alone in a hole in the ground.
You could have a birthday party with dancing,
Alexa said.
No, thanks.
I would rather spend my birthday alone in a hole in the ground in a snowstorm.
You could take a few friends to the art museum,
Mom said as she dusted the living room furniture.
No, thanks.
I would rather spend my birthday alone in a hole in the ground in a snowstorm in the dark.
