Chapter One
Police Roadblock
Comfortably astride his trusty motorcycle Pegasus, named after the winged flying horse, handsome biker Tommy (they used to call him No Eyes) is lonely, and longs for a girl friend to be his True Love, he is looking for his Soul Mate. She is nowhere in sight, but he is looking hard for her, and will find her before long. For now he enjoys feeling the cool morning air on his face, and seeing the paved road unwind effortlessly if too slowly beneath him. He likes the Midwestern country views of distant brick red painted barns, and little white farmhouses, looking like miniature toys set down on dark brown earthen rugs. The smell of freshly turned moist soil is pleasant, and he hardly notices the occasional whiff of dairy country manure.Hanging dewdrops refracting the morning light look like perfect white diamonds set into wedding rings, and the agreeable quiet is broken only by birdcalls, a few cattle mooing, and the occasional distant sound of a farm tractor noisily hurrying to finish late spring planting. Tommy sees and hears it all, in detail. His vision is excellent and so is his hearing, very unusual for a biker. Most bikers have hearing loss due to constant loud engine noise, but Pegasus could be very quiet. It is very quiet now; there is no engine noise at all.
Tommy likes nature, but he chafes at the country road’s posted speed limit of only 60 miles per hour, his basic need for speed is little satisfied by such a snail’s pace. No doubt SKY EYE satellites, The Eyes in the Sky, are watching him as they watch everything, always alert for anything suspicious. Anything out of the ordinary is suspicious, anything suspicious is investigated, and any violation, no matter how small, is harshly punished. So he obeyed the posted speed limit. But oh, how he longed to be at Mom’s Place.
The popular biker roadhouse and hangout Mom’s Place was not far off now, and he looked forward to enjoying himself there. Mom’s offers something for most any taste or persuasion. As the saying goes different strokes for different folks and Mom’s has it pretty much for you, no matter what your needs are. Tommy is a romantic at heart, he is looking for true love, and though he is not likely to find it at Mom’s place, he’s quite ready to look for it there.
Then he made a turn, and as the road straightened out all at once the radar proximity alarm sounded. It showed something car sized blocking the road 6 miles ahead. Quickly and easily doing the math, Tommy figures that at his speed of 60 miles per hour it would take 6 miles divided by 60 miles per hour, or one-tenth of an hour, to get there, 60 minutes per hour divided by 10 gave him 6 minutes. He had 6 minutes easy. Should he slow down for more time? There was no need.
But the engine noisemaker was turned off, to hear the country sounds. Reaching down he flicked a tiny switch, and was immediately engulfed in a wave of barely muffled gasoline engine noise and heat. The satellite SKY EYEs have excellent visual tracking, but their heat detectors, working off lower energy infrared rays rather than light, were not sensitive enough to show his tiny, newly appeared heat signature.
Though quite clean at this time, there is always a chance of trouble from overly zealous/crazed Po-lice. No need to check the weapons systems, they were always ready, and so was he. Po-lice and bikers were never friends, always enemies. Now he heard only the roar, felt only the heat, thought only of the coming confrontation. The morning was no longer pleasant.
Before long it all came into view. There were three patrol cars, Sheriff’s from the markings. That was good; Sheriffs were usually easier going than Federals. Sheriffs were local; Federals were from the site of all power, the feared and dreaded Washington. As they approached each other Tommy mentally reviewed the situation. Was there anything they could get him on? All past beefs had been squared, one-way or the other. No, he and Pegasus were now both squeaky clean. But still, you never knew. You never knew. He was ready for anything.
While still a half mile away Tommy reduced speed. Coming closer he saw three men in uniform standing beside a Patrol car blocking the road, with two squad cars parked off to the side. He drove up close but not too close, stopped, turned off the engine, and sat there waiting.
Two of them were just Apprentice Deputies, young and with the acne pimples of late adolescence. They were rough looking kids, aggression and tension showed in the way they stood, all ready for fight or flight. If they got the nerve up, they would be
