The dogs were barking again. They had every night for the past week as soon as the sun dipped below the trees. I knew it wouldn't be the last noise I heard tonight either. Once the dogs started barking, the wolves would answer with howls that bled through the walls and shook the windows. There was a pack in the area and it put me on edge. I wasn't worried about my safety, but my ranch was already struggling. I couldn't have a hungry pack at my fences, threatening my animals.

Like clockwork, a howl pierced the night air from the north. A few seconds later and the first wolf was answered by others. It sounded like my small farm was surrounded. Not only were the yips and howls echoing all around me, but they were much closer than the night before. My dogs were at the door scratching at the wood, begging to be let out to defend the farm. Maybe they had the right idea. The wolves were becoming a bit too brave. They needed some fear put into them.

I grabbed a shirt and my father's old double barreled shotgun from the closet. I slipped on the shirt and pulled on a jacket as well, filling the pockets with shotgun shells. This was my land and no damn wolves were going to take it from me. I picked up the gun and headed for the door. Lancelot and Galahad, my father's old hunting dogs, were waiting for me. I pet them both on their large heads and then reached for the knob.

The door opened and my two Great Danes dashed into the night, quickly disappearing into the darkness. I stepped outside and closed the door behind me, clutching the unfamiliar gun in my hands tightly. Now that I was out here, I was wondering just why I had left the safety of my bed in the first place.

The howling had stopped and the dogs were quiet. I strained my ears, hoping to hear my furry protectors returning to the house but the air was still. At least I could be thankful that my porch lighting was working for once.

I moved to the side of the house slowly, afraid to leave the safe glow of the house lights. I could see the barn in the distance, as well as the shadowy outline of my small stable. Closer to the house were my chicken coops, fenced in by wire. I stared into the darkness hoping to see Lancelot and Galahad but nothing was moving in the distance.

    Wait, what was that?

Something was near the coops. My dogs? I stepped off the porch and held the gun to my shoulder as I moved towards the chickens. More movement, quick and low to the ground. Whatever it was, I couldn't see it right now. It had darted behind the chicken coops. My heart pounded in my chest.

I called out for my dogs with a whispered shout. Lancelot! Galahad!

    Whatever
