    CHAPTER ONE

    Chapter

    MICHELLE

Well, let's say they did exist. Alex grinned at me from the driver's seat of his new Ford. Which would you prefer? His thumb tapped several times on the steering wheel as he came to a stop at the last red light at the edge of town.

Is it really a competition at all? I teased. Werewolves. Aren't they supposedly designed to kill vampires? Wouldn't that make them the winner by default?

I set my elbow on the window sill and snatched a lock of wild, blowing hair to twirl it around my fingers. Alex wiped his large hands on his pants before shooting me an inquisitive frown.

I guess. So you'd say werewolves are stronger than vampires, then? He leaned back and glanced up at the light.

They would have to be. Right?

The light turned green. As Alex started rolling the wheels another glimmer shined in his eyes. He directed his attention back to the road. We drove for another five miles in contented silence.

So, here's another one for you, since you have this werewolf  and vampire lore all figured out.

Hit me. It was true. I devoured Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles nine times each, as well as all the werewolf lore- preteen, teen and adult. I knew they were fictitious beings, but being the bookworm I was made me the go-to gal whenever a debate over vampires and werewolves was sparked.

    Sex. Which is better?

    Depends on what you like.

I'm asking what you like. Alex shifted to rest one hand on the steering wheel to talk with his hands. My face split into a grin, unable to hold in my nervous giggles. No, seriously. If you had a vampire and a werewolf courting you right this moment, who do you think could satisfy you the most?

This was no contest, The werewolf, definitely.

His eyebrows shot up in surprise, Really?

Well, yeah. I felt my face turn red, If I had to choose. Vampires have their own appeal, too.

    Alex muttered something to himself.

    What?

    Nothing. Go on.

I just prefer the alpha male, I guess. A man who'll chase me through a house, throw me around every now and then. Plus the whole protector thing.

A countenance of concentration crossed over Alex as he leaned against the door.

I decided to jab some fun at him. Now's the part where you tell me which one you secretly are.

Truth be told, if they did exist, Alex would fit the werewolf stereotype to a T. He's big, at least double my size. Every time I see him he's eating some kind of meat: steak, pork, chicken, hell, even beef jerky, and lots of it. Oh yeah, and lives in a neighborhood composed almost entirely of family up on the northern part of the mountain. Surrounded by, you guessed it, woods.

Nah, I'll leave you to figure that one out on your own. He poked back. We're almost there.

The orange-red glow in the sky caught my attention and I glanced out the window towards the falling sun. Rays of scarlet and tangerine splashed over the fluffy clouds. It was setting behind the mountains, making them look like giant, majestic purple pyramids off in the distance.

So what are the conditions of this again?

Alex wiped a hand across his forehead. Drive up to the peak, take off clothes, streak through town without getting caught, first one to the waterfall wins and the loser has to do whatever the winner says for the rest of the night.

I made an approving grunt and nodded my head. Alex knew what he was up against and still had the gall to even try such a thing with me. I grew up here and knew every slope and tree like the back of my hand.

You know how dangerous this is, right?

I think I'll be just fine. I assured. He should know, he was the one who taught me how to hunt. Besides, there is nothing up here. Except wolves, and those aren't vicious this close to the town.

Alex nodded, then smiled again to himself. Before I could even guess at what was going through his mind, my attention was swept away by the gorgeous full moon.

Unless werewolves exist, then I guess we might be in a little bit of trouble.

Alex followed my gaze and laughed. If werewolves are slaves to the moon cycle, then how can they be more powerful than vampires?

They are the embodiment of lack of control! That's their whole appeal. It's just more passionate than vampires. A vampire will suck your blood erotically, fighting to stop within an inch of your life. Like hardcore S&M. But werewolves are the evolved, concentrated embodiment of human nature. Alex was silent, so I continued. When a werewolf wants to eat, he just goes out and hunts until he's full. No questions asked. Vampires have to seduce their food with promises of sex. When a werewolf wants sex he just... takes it.

I had to calm myself down from envisioning Alex doing that. Just taking me. Something as simple as thinking it, and as daring as saying it out loud was making my folds slicken. I want him to, and once I win the race, that will be my first demand.

We pulled off the main road to the first of many smaller, steeper dirt roads that would lead to our starting line. Sporadic shadows crossed into the cab as he drove on the one-lane trail.

    And that's a good thing?

I waited until he locked eyes with me before replying. Some women like being hunted.

His eyelids were red as he rolled the truck to a halt. I thought I saw the spark of understanding flash in his eyes, but he turned to shut off the truck before I could tell for certain. Alex opened his door and climbed out. You ready for this?

I hoped out and shut my door before heading around to the truck bed. Sun hasn't gone down yet.

I thought I would give you a five minute head start.

I leaned casually against the red pickup and Alex fluidly peeled the blue shirt off of his body and swung his arms like he was getting ready to run a marathon. I supposed, in a way, we were.

I don't really need a head start. I pulled my shirt off
