The road is deserted and Emma walks down it with the familiarity of someone who has walked down this road dozens of times before. Trilling, Illinois, a patch of unspoiled land thirty miles outside of Chicago. Emma nags at her lower lip, she keeps trying to compose the love letter in her head, but it will not come. Emma makes her living writing and selling erotic love letters. Her recent client, a dark-haired, pretty, young woman had come to Emma two weeks ago, wanting her to write a love letter to her boyfriend of about a year.
Can't we be together forever? I want to, don't you? Is not love supposed to taper off as time goes on? Yet, our seems not to.
To sentimental, thought Emma dismissively.
I think I love you, but it scares me. It is like I am walking down a path that I have never walked down before
Emma grimaces, too clichéd.
Her mind still very much on the love letter, Emma fails to notice the man steadily jogging toward her. By the time she does, he is only a few feet away. The road's surrounding area is populated by woods, full of big giant trees that have been there for decades; their brownish green trunks speaks of strength and durability, and their green and yellow-lime leaves speak of the approach of spring. Emma has walked down this isolated road every morning and rarely has seen anyone else on it but her.
As the jogger gets nearer, Emma watches as he suddenly zigzags, landing further away from her, effectively widening the gap between them and any fears she might have had that he is dangerous.
Emma's first impression of the jogger is his blue-black hair, plastered to the side of his head with sweat. Her second impression is that he is maybe thirty-two, maybe older. Emma can see that he lacks the
