    Jamie pulled the blanket closer around her. Her T-Shirt and cutoffs weren’t very warm and she was too lazy to walk up to the cabin and change. She sat on a hard, wide boulder facing the water and the fire. Smoke blowing in her eyes made them sting. This hadn’t turned out the way she’d thought. The ‘cottage’ was a gray one room shack on this pathetic excuse of an island off the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It had taken her all of an hour to circle the island and that included weaving through the little forest and around the huge boulders and cliffs. No one lived here except screeching gulls and a raven that dived at her and chased her down the path.

    She was going crazy here. The cabin walls closed in on her at night, screaming at her about how alone she was. She needed to be outside.

    She got up and tossed more driftwood on the fire.

    Get a grip on yourself. It’s only one more week.

    She’d already been here two weeks. She sat down again, gazing into the red, orange flames. The surrounding darkness of the entire world bore down on her. There seemed to be nothing out there. No one else.

    She was alone.

    No cell phone, no ipod, no TV, not even a bloody
