Chapter 1

As the last male of the clan stepped into the center of the ring and whispered into the head councilman’s ear, Diana Peters tensed, as one of eleven tigresses of age from her clan, awaiting the most important moment in their lives. Sitting primly in tiger form with head held high, they lined a half-circle on one end of the clearing. Six of the women showing their stripes around her stood, practically gloating, having already been chosen.

Diana’s heart thundered in her chest. If Ranger, the male currently making his choice for a mate didn’t choose her, she’d be relegated to another clan, away from everything she’d grown up with, everyone she knew and loved. And on top of that, she’d feel rejected. Being chosen as a mate was the highest of honors, and it was the moment for which every female tiger prepared throughout her adolescence. She’d dreamed of this day, hoped to earn herself a strong, respectable mate who would honor and cherish her the way her father had cherished her mother.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t guarantee that a male from another clan would have the same morals as those she’d watched mature and learn from their elders here in her own clan. Diana’s heart fell as Wendy stood and let out a soft roar of acceptance. This was it, then. She was doomed to a life with a stranger she didn’t know, in another, unfamiliar clan and a sense of personal failure. She nearly hung her head but wouldn’t let the others see her struggle. She wouldn’t be pitied, especially not with four others like her who would share a similar fate. Now, she only hoped she wouldn’t be the last tiger left sitting, looking like the least desirable available female.
