Excerpt:

"D'aw, did you hear that?" Debra grinned. "My cutie-pie princess wants her heart to be set free!"

"Yeah," Elliott grumbled. "Real charming."

Debra raised a finger into the air and announced her plans with a commanding voice. "This sounds like a job for her dashing husband-to-be!" A hammer appeared in her hand, and she commenced whacking on Elliott's body so rapidly that each strike was just a blur of colors. Many stars fluttered into the air, and the whole scene became veiled by a cartoon cloud.

"Stop ... hitting ... me ... Debra!" Elliott yelled between strikes.

When Debra ceased and found the end to be ruptured and cracked, she tossed the tool into the nearby bushes and retrieved a jackhammer from one of her pockets. "Not strong enough, eh? This should do the trick!" The electric motor whined to life, and she aimed the chisel at her husband's abdomen, thwacking the chains loudly.

The rabbit covered his face with his front paw. "Oh brother."

The immense power of the jackhammer was still no match for Elliott's chains, and when the racket ceased, Debra was bouncing up and down as if the machine hadn't stopped. She ricocheted off of a tree, causing the whole thing to come crashing down. Meanwhile, Elliott's body had been severed into many pieces, and a disconnected mouth spoke while the separated eyes became tight. "Nice try."

The rabbit hopped over as the princess returned to one full piece, and Debra stopped vibrating. "The chains can only be undone by the magic of the mountain wizard."

"Sheesh, now you tell me!" Debra complained.

"Up there," the rabbit pointed over the trees and to a dark rocky peak situated against an angered sky. Flashes of lightning shot across the cloud base, slamming into the mountaintop and resulting in explosive echoes that rattled the entire valley.

Elliott jumped from his feet and Debra caught him in her arms. "Yikes! That looks dangerous!"

"Ha! Watch how a real man handles this," Debra said. "I can handle a wizard."

Just then, a bolt of lightning came zigzagging out of the sky right onto Debra's helmet. Elliott was flung to the ground as the knight's skin disappeared, leaving only a skeleton that crumbled into a pile of dust. Two scared eyes looked up at the princess.

"A real man for sure," Elliott laughed. "You sure showed that lightning who the boss around here was."

The pile of dust blinked.

Elliott cradled the device in his palms, watching as a streak of light circled around the metallic edge and glimmered off of the individual buttons and dials. The craftsmanship was his best yet, and the remote was indistinguishable from one he could find at the store, except for the absurd amount of buttons that ran all down the face of it. After it was unveiled to the general public, companies would be lining up at his door to offer him written checks. Elliott's eyes turned into dollar signs.

Elliott? A voice came from the stairs. What do you want to eat? It was his wife, Debra.

Oh I'm thinking something unusual tonight. Something we haven't had in a long time. We need to celebrate!

The sound of Debra's shoes against the wood steps ceased, and Elliott turned on his chair to see his wife coughing and wiping the lingering dust from her face. The basement was only illuminated by a lone desk lamp, and he could only see her lower body underneath a heavy shadow, and the silhouette of her black shape outlined by a light upstairs.

"Yuck, Elliott. This place needs to be cleaned out, unless you want to live with a family of mice."

It's my laboratory, Elliott defended himself. What you see as a dirty basement, I see as a room of opportunity.

Yeah, whatever, Debra coughed. And what exactly are we celebrating?

"This." Elliott swiveled around fully with the remote in his hands, extending his arm out so that his wife could see it clearly. He could hardly hide his gleeful smile, and the weight of the thing made him realize just how real this moment truly was. The future was bright and promising.

Debra replied a moment later. What is it?

    "It's a remote."

A remote? Debra was dumbfounded. A remote for what?

    "Everything."

"So, a universal remote? Don't we already have one?"

Elliott went to his feet and walked over to his wife, carefully holding his latest invention as if one wrong vibration could ruin everything. "Those don't control everything."

Yeah they do, Debra countered. Television. DVD player. Satellite. What else is there?

"The microwave. Range. Every single light in the entire house. The thermostat. Even the shower! It's a true universal remote!"

Debra's lips parted for a moment, and she stared at the device in her husband's hand. It didn't look like anything fancy, and it was actually quite unappealing on the surface. The outside was irregular and ragged around the seam where the bottom and top had been attached, and most of the buttons were of random colors with no sense of thought put into their arrangement.

Elliott sensed her disgust with the appearance. It's a prototype.

    "An early one ..."

The first! These things never look good when they're in the planning stages. Once everything is finalized and a company has bought the rights to make one, it'll be smaller and more streamlined. Here, you can hold it.

With the exchange of the device, Debra grunted as the full weight of the remote went into her hands. "God! It weighs more than a brick! That's not very convenient. And these sharp edges could really hurt someone!"

    Prototype, Elliott reminded her.

Debra eyed the face of the remote. There were at least thirty buttons by her guess, and she spotted some of the more familiar ones, like the adjustments for volume and switching channels. There was a typical number pad and a power button. However, all the rest were a mystery.

    Looks complex.

Up here, Elliott pointed, "is a dial that allows you to connect with any electronic device within a certain range. Right now, it's programmed to be anything in the house. When you turn the dial, this small display will show what the remote is tuned with."

    Can I turn it?

Go ahead. Besides, I need to start the testing phase to make sure everything works anyways. You can help me with that.

Debra tapped her chin. I don't know. Remember that time that you said you made a teleporter, but it was just some phone booth that almost caused the house to burn down?

That was different. I'm more experienced now.

"Or when you said that taking a pill could give someone superpowers, but I ended up taking you to the hospital when you went unconscious."

Maybe the dosage wasn't correct. I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong there.

And now you've made a remote, Debra said, the excitement in
