In the morning, Jerry awoke with a small puddle of drool in the sheets near his mouth. His head ached, and each of his fingertips was numb, the same as his toes. He sat up and rubbed his temples, trying to recall the most recent hours, but discovering only a blurry haze that seemed to be an absence of memory. When his vision adjusted, he looked over and saw Benny in his bed, head against the wall, staring straight ahead. His lips were moving, but Jerry could not hear the words coming out.

"What are you doing?" Jerry asked when his voice came back to him.

Benny turned, a deadness in his eyes. "Praying to get out of this place."

"Get in line," Jerry sighed, walking unevenly to the toilet and sitting down on the old seat. "I don't think God is going to help you in this place."

"I don't remember what happened last night," Benny said, his voice almost a whimper. He wiped a lone tear from his eye and flung it away. "I saw the man taking me, and felt his cold hands on my arm. Then, it's just dark. I remember coming to, but it was early in the morning and still dark out, and you were asleep. I couldn't fall under after thinking about what happened."

"Was there a man with a needle?"

Benny thought for a moment, though the shadows in his mind were difficult to reform into recognizable shapes. One of them did look like a silhouette, though he wasn't sure. And maybe there was something in his hand. "I think so. I don't know."

"You won't remember anything. I've been here for four months and I can't recall what they do to me during the night. I'll wake up screaming my head off, and no one will come running to help me. My head hurts, and I can see a red mark on my butt. They won't tell you anything, just as they haven't told me anything."

Benny was an emotional mess now, more than he ever had been as a man. His lower eyelids were lined with a clear liquid, some of which had begun to stream down his face. He wiped at the tears feverishly, but more would simply spill out. He couldn't remember the last time he had cried. "Is this punishment?"
