    Chapter 1

Jeanette perused the dessert menu, praying she had enough makeup on to hide the redness in her cheeks that the dim restaurant light couldn't. Across the table, her sister Danae prattled on about something cool she'd seen online. Between them, her sister's husband Mark sat quietly finishing off his dinner - a twelve-ounce steak cooked medium rare, mashed potatoes with dark gravy and green beans, hold the butter.

    Not that she'd noticed.

It was wrong, the way she reacted to him. Or the way her body reacted, rather. She would never act on it, of course, even if he'd given some indication of returning her interest, which he never had. She was definitely not a man-stealer, or a cheater, and he wasn't either.

Unfortunately her hormones thought he was the greatest thing ever, and the only way to keep them under control was to avoid the man as much as possible.

When she couldn't? Well, there was always dessert.

I'll have the Creme Brulee, she said when the waiter came by, earning a disapproving look from her perfect size zero sister. She simply raised her eyebrows, daring Danae to deny her the sweet substitute for a hot, hunky man of her own.

I thought you said you were laying off the sweets for awhile, Danae said, her tone even and nonjudgmental. That was different. She didn’t normally miss a chance to nag about Jeanette’s weight.

Jeanette shrugged. I've been good all week, and I haven't missed a night at the gym. I can afford the calories - I'll work them off later. She frowned at her sister, who looked decidedly pale. Are you feeling okay?

Danae looked at Mark, and heat nearly rolled off of them in waves as he reached over and covered her hand with his. They shared a smile, and Jeanette’s heart beat faster at the mere sight of their obvious affection for each other.

    She was a horrible person.

Finally looking away from her husband, Danae turned her grin to Jeanette, her cheeks sporting a light rose color.

We were going to wait and tell the whole family this weekend, but I can’t. Jeanette, I’m pregnant. You’re going to be an aunt!

Wow! The waitress set her dessert on the table, and Jeanette nodded her thanks. That’s...great news! Congratulations! She was careful to include Mark in her nod, but focused on her sister. When are you due?

I’m only a couple of months along, so around May 10th, the doctor thinks. Danae’s gaze moved to something behind Jeanette, and her face lit up in recognition. Mark, isn’t that Daniel?

Mark turned to look, and Jeanette reached for her purse, forgetting all about the custard she’d been salivating over just moments earlier. The hair on the back of her neck prickled as she felt the familiar gaze of Mark’s best friend hone in on her.

    Damn.

Daniel Ellis was a dark force of nature. His very presence made Jeanette tense and uncomfortable - the way he looked at her made her feel like a rabbit in the sights of a wolf. She wanted to run, but once his eyes held hers, she was powerless to move away.

He made her think of scary, wicked things. Things no good girl in her right mind would ever want to do.

His one redeeming grace was that when he was in the room, no one else existed. Not even Mark.

Her body heated as her sister invited Daniel to join them, and he did – taking the seat right next to Jeanette. She resisted looking at him, focusing instead on Danae’s blissful expression as she shared the good news with Daniel. Congratulations were made all around, and Jeanette just sat, smiling. Nodding. Wondering when she could make her escape.

    How was your dessert?

Jeanette shivered, that deep, masculine timbre whispering across her senses. So dangerous. She processed the question slowly, confused until she looked down and noted that her Creme Brulee was completely gone.

It was definitely time to go.

Um, yeah. I guess so. Nodding, she pushed her chair back, nearly toppling over with
