    Chapter 1

Audrey Patrick stopped in front of her favorite pastry shop and frowned up at the closed sign on the door. Glancing at her watch, she checked the appointment time on her phone again before cupping one hand against the glass and peering inside the dim shop. Relieved to see a man in a white apron busy behind the counter, she smiled, knocking firmly on the glass door. Thank God she hadn’t missed the opportunity.

The man turned, looking every bit as delicious as she remembered, though at the moment he appeared to be rather annoyed by the intrusion. Striding out from behind the counter, he came to the door but didn’t open it.

We’re closed, he yelled, pointing to the sign. Come back tomorrow!

Audrey shook her head. I’m not here to shop, I’m here for an interview. At his confused stare, she held up her phone with the appointment showing so he could see. I have an appointment. She pointed at the phone, starting to get a little irritated herself. An in-ter-view?

He paused for a moment, looking her up and down. The stern expression on his face was intimidating, but no worse than the chefs she’d worked with at school. Smiling pleasantly, she waited for him to make the next move.

Finally he pointed to her right. Go around back. Not waiting for an answer, he stalked away, leaving Audrey to wonder if she’d made a grave mistake. Could she have gotten the date wrong? She checked it again as she walked around the building to a metal door in back and tried the knob. It wouldn’t turn.

Stepping back, she surveyed the brick windowless wall with a sigh. Obviously the woman she’d spoken to a week before hadn’t told her boss about Audrey, and apparently he wasn’t in the mood to even give her a chance.

What would he say, she wondered, if he knew she’d had a crush on him since she was sixteen? Would he remember the girl who’d come in nearly every day after school to buy a small pastry just so she could get a quick glimpse of him working in the kitchen? Probably not, she thought as she looked down at the much slimmer body she’d worked hard to find underneath all the youthful padding those pastries had helped to maintain. He’d inspired her in more ways than one, and he was a big part of the reason she’d become a pastry chef herself.

She should have known her dream of working alongside him one day was too good to be true.

One last glance at the steel door, and she turned to go.

Well? Are you just going to stand out there daydreaming all day, or are you coming in?

Looking to her left, she saw him watching her from a doorway five feet from the one she’d been waiting by, and her cheeks heated with the knowledge that he’d been watching her
