About this ebook

Spiritual Warfare For Africa? is a book written for every Christian interested in the ministry of intercession. Africa is choking with myths of spiritual warfare because people are aware of the heavy demonic infestation suffered by loved ones, friends, and acquaintances. There is hardly an adult in Sub-Saharan Africa who does not know a single person who is demon possessed or under spiritual bondage. This writer seeks to draw the focus of intercessors and ordinary believers to a broader understanding of spiritual warfare. The classical picture of spiritual warriors dressed as exorcists does a dis-service to the Kingdom of God because spiritual warfare is more than prayer. Everything a child of God does or says is a part of it. All humans are either gathering with Christ or scattering people from Christ in their daily interactions. No one is neutral because when a person has not chosen to gather with Christ, their default spiritual warfare position is with those who are scattering people away from Christ. Spiritual warfare is love in actions such as philanthropy, education, good business, politics; but it is also, prayer, fasting, evangelism and a commitment to all the spiritual disciplines the Bible illustrates. Africa can benefit from balanced approaches to spiritual warfare and this book is a small part of that.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Brother Peter Sibande, and other men of God at Northmead Assemblies of God, Lusaka, Zambia, who taught me the basics of spiritual warfare. I also acknowledge the teachings of Dean Sherman, the former Dean of the University of the Nations, and Pastor Fred Katenda, my earliest senior prayer partner. Last but not least is my wife, Jean Mumbi, who has fought alongside me in the battles of life and continues to be my primary prayer partner to this day. I thank you all!

Prologue

Every generation has to do battle on a plane that is not natural. Business people, military strategists, political leaders, everybody involved in do or die endeavors prays. The difference is in how they pray, who they pray to, and when they pray. Book launches, ship and aircraft launches; almost every great beginning begins with a prayer of some sorts. Why? All humans intuitively know there are powers greater than themselves but not greater than the ultimate supreme power. Intuitively, every human wants to align themselves with the strongest supernatural force to ensure success, survival, and prosperity for themselves or their loved ones. This is spiritual warfare. All humans do it but not all humans wage spiritual wars successfully. This book is about how to do so successfully.

Chapter One: Let Us Think Straight Before We Get Dirty.

Africa is called, The Dark Continent, isn't it? If anyone should know about Spiritual Warfare it is the Africans followed by the Indians, not so? There are no Witches in Los Angeles, California, is that true? Satan and his fallen angels live in Africa exclusively, not so? Spiritual deliverance is dangerous mysticism performed by fanatics, traumatizing suffers of psychological illnesses, not so? Science can account for all spiritual phenomena previous generations attributed to demonic activity not so?

The topic of Spiritual warfare is not new, but it every generation has to grapple with understanding the activities of malevolent nonhuman persons partly as an explanation for the existence of evil, and partly as a means of equipping oneself for spiritual encounters with spiritual entities that are bent on doing evil.

Spiritual warfare has generally had two extreme effects on people: some have been struck with terror at the mention of the reality of being in a spiritual battle with forces that are much stronger, swifter, more intelligent, and invisible; others have responded to the knowledge of such warfare with such excitement about their spiritual authority that they have become professional exorcists chasing demons from city to city. Spiritual warfare can be scary because it is not always fun to confront and dislodge demons from people whose bodies have taken a huge beating from the demonic realm. However, it is definitely exciting to see people coming to freedom from demonic oppression.

Spiritual warfare is not about feeding this taste for spiritually exciting services, it is a normal and natural outgrowth of our relationship with God. All who take their places as Children of God living under the Lordship of Jesus Christ will experience greater levels of spiritual warfare than ever before. That is a given.

Spiritual warfare is not a strange hobby of some fringe religious fanatics, it is the daily lifestyle of all who dare to live as salt and light in the world today. The enemy’s best way to avoid detection is to come in stealthily and Satan; as a master of stealth, is actually described as a thief by Jesus himself (John 10:10). Spiritual warfare is living in such a way that such intrusions will be detected and thwarted easily. Just as there are many stories of soldiers shooting their own troops by mistake (friendly fire), spiritual warfare has its share of such mistakes and it is in the interest of every Christian to know enough not to do harm to other children of God. Jesus pointed to knowing the truth as a path towards freedom (John 8:32); it is his expectation that those who follow him will continue in his instructions and when they do, they will come to a liberating knowledge of the truth. Spiritual warfare is about living according to the truth. This means every child of God must be up to speed with God’s appraisal of past, present, and future realities.

PAST REALITY

In the distant past, there was conflict in Heaven and Satan lost the war against God’s loyal angels. The Bible puts it this way: Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven (Revelation 12:7-8 ESV). Many conservative Evangelicals believe that Satan is the Great Dragon whose tail drew a third of the angels with him (His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. (Revelation 12:4 ESV). In history, the reader will remember that Herod is the King, under the suzerainty of the Caesars, who attempted to kill Jesus. Thus, the woman in the apocalyptic picture is generally understood to be the nation of Israel, and her son is no other than Jesus Christ.

Satan first appears in the Garden of Eden fighting for human loyalty. He wins it and takes with it the authority given to humankind to have dominion over the planet. In Genesis 1:26, the Bible says, Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.'

When Satan stood to tempt Jesus with the beauty of the kingdoms of the world, he lends authority to his argument by claiming possession and authority over the whole world. Luke records, And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, 'To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours'(Luke 4:5-7 ESV). Who gave it all to him? Adam and Eve! What a stunning coup d' etat!

We know that this victory is short-lived by the arrival of the Suffering Messiah. Jesus redeems humankind from legal servitude the power they bound themselves to, He took the punishment for sin that the holiness of God required, and made room for their adoption into God’s family. On Jesus’s way back to Heaven, he spelled out the new reality in terms of power rearrangements in the universe. All power was now concentrated in Jesus’ hands and His disciples were now charged to take this Good News out to every living person on earth. His disciple, Matthew, recorded the command and its rationale as follows:

And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'(Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

This was really Good News for every human being! Satan's permissions and his authority over the whole planet and all of its people had come to an end! The authority for exercising legitimate power over people, the earth, and its resources was taken away by God and given to Jesus Christ—God's official heir to all created things. From that day, Satan's kingdom has been on the retreat while the Kingdom of God has been advancing.

The Apostle Paul captured the picture of what had happened when he was inspired to write a sweet letter to his church in the city of Ephesus (modern day Turkey). He understood Roman Empire-styled victory processions. He wanted the Ephesian believers to picture a triumphing Jesus Christ arriving in the City of God, in a victory train that would include his own army, key prisoners, and freed Romans who had been held in captivity by the enemy. Paul shows Jesus as one who gives gifts because conquering generals also did that. They used the goods they plundered from their enemies as gifts for their own people. Jesus uses the Father's riches to bless His Church (the Bride of Christ). This is how he puts it,

"Therefore it says, 'When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.' (In saying, 'He ascended,' what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) (Ephesians 4:8-10 ESV)

To the Church at Colossae, Paul reminds his readers that the enemy is disarmed. He wrote,
