When I first decided to write this book and start on this journey, I knew that my friends and family would be supportive. But I was in no way prepared for the depth and immediacy of that support. As I shared my ideas with those closest to me, they not only said we know you can do it,
they said how can I help?
As anyone who takes on any type of labor of love knows, it is not a task that you can take on alone. First, I have to thank the other Erin, who was my motivation whenever I started having doubts. Her enthusiasm and assistance was and is invaluable. Leland Frates, MA, MT-BC was my sounding board and collaborator. Thank you to Michele, Mary Ann, and Peggy for your feedback and insights. To Matt and Jack for the (multiple) consents! To each of my brothers and sisters-in-law for so much; but primarily for assuming that I would finish this project successfully.
To all the professors, peers, and colleagues that provided knowledge, experience, and opportunities for me to lean about music therapy, practice music therapy, and share music therapy.
To Honey and Jimbo, Billie and Da, Pat and Bitz, who were my first role models on the road to entrepreneurism.
To you, my readers, for participating in the lives of your children and for having the courage to try something new and possibly intimidating.
Thank you, mama, as always.
And to J.T. for the initial direction.
Sincerely.

Welcome to The Music Initiative! I hope that you enjoy participating in these activities as much as I enjoyed compiling them for you. I felt a lot of creative energy as I was developing this product, and I encourage all of you to tap into your own creative expression as you enjoy these activities with your child. Use your own strengths, talents, and knowledge to enhance experiences while building a foundation through music activities from which you, your child and family can form stronger, more engaging bonds.
Some of you may be familiar with music therapy already. For those who are not, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines music therapy as:
[The] clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program
(2005).
While this product is based on the tenets of music therapy as defined by the AMTA, it is in no way a comprehensive, clinical approach. Rather, it is a guide to assist in bringing music therapy-based activities to individuals who may not have a musical background or access to music and music therapy.
This guide is designed to present a basic experience with music and music therapy-based activities. More advanced techniques,
