    To Love a Grandmother - Catherine A. MacKenzie

    Introduction

    Anyone who is a mother or grandmother - or has a grandmother or wants to be a grandmother - will enjoy these poems.

    The poems in this book are about mothering and grandmothers, about babies and children. There are several about ageing and death, something all of us have to face eventually. The poems are varied - some are rhyming, some free verse; some are long, some short; some are sad, some happy. Several poems are about my own experiences and joy of being a grandmother - Granny, as I am called.

    I used to write poetry years ago. I began again after I became a grandmother, when I was overcome with such deep and unexpected feelings of awe and wonderment. Poetry became my outlet. I had no idea when I started writing that I would end up with so many poems. As a result, my first book was born, a self-published print book in 2009 entitled Poems for Grandmothers.

    This book is a compilation of one hundred of my favourite poems pertaining to grandmothering, approximately half of which were published in my print book.

    As of this date (after what seemed like many years of yearning for grandchildren), I have two granddaughters, Taylor and Abby, both three and a half years of age; a ten-year-old step-granddaughter, Kyla; and a grandson, Caden, nine months old.

    I hope you enjoy these poems as much as I enjoyed writing them.

    ~~~
    This book is dedicated
    to all grandmothers -
    especially to my two Grandmothers who,
    having been such Special Angels while here on Earth,
    must surely now rest in Heaven
    ~~~

    Catherine Beatrice Crowe MacKenzie.)

    The Best

    The best mothers grow into the best grandmothers

    They have so much love, children they love to smother

    Grandmothers can have their grandchildren for a day

    And then send them home to their mothers to stay.

    ~~~
    GrandMothers
    Some grandmothers hide their feelings of grief
    If they show their heartache, it is all too brief
    Grandmothers put aside their feelings for others
    Maybe that is why they are called GrandMothers.
    ~~~

    A Grandmother's Wish

    I wish you moonbeams and love so pure

    A life to treasure, no pain to endure

    I wish you a lifetime of wondrous joy

    A happiness so fine for you to enjoy.

    ~~~
    If There Were Little Ones Under My Feet
    I can't wait to be a grandmother someday,
    I'd sing with you and so many games we'd play,
    There'd be so much love when you and I do meet,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    I'd take you for drives and walks in the park,
    I'd point out the birds - a robin and a lark,
    We'd stop and talk, many people to greet,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    We'd go to the playground, swing on the swings,
    You'd ride on the seesaw holding the rings,
    There'd be a park bench where I'd rest my seat,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    I'd take you shopping and strap you in the cart,
    Wouldn't let you run wild around aisles to dart,
    And if you were good, I'd buy you a treat,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    I'd take you to the pool when the weather was hot,
    You'd have fun in the water with another tot,
    I'd put sunscreen on you when out in the heat,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    If you stayed overnight, you would be fed,
    I would rock you to sleep and put you to bed,
    I'd cover you up with a blanket and a sheet,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    I'd dress you up frilly, if you were a girl,
    I'd brush your hair and comb a soft curl,
    I'd be sure your dress was pink and sweet,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    If you were a boy, I'd dress you in blue,
    No fancy frills or pink outfits for you,
    I'd make sure your clothes were clean and neat,
    If there were little ones under my feet.
    Is This Grandma?
    Grandma departed from her home on earth,
    she said for greater things,
    There were people she wanted to see,
    many loved ones who went before,
    And the love and blessings given to her,
    that to everyone God brings,
    She took them all with her
    when she went through that heavenly door.
    She told me a long time ago,
    that she missed my Grandpa very much,
    A wonderful life they had together,
    his fine face she longed to see,
    But she told me it was up to God,
    when they would once more touch,
    And she knew he was in a happier place,
    where he was finally free.
    I can feel the sparkling sun
    shining down upon me most every day,
    And when I look up to the beaming rays
    of the hot blinding sun,
    I wonder if they are loving paths from Grandma
    showing me the way,
    Leading me with her guidance and presence
    before the day is done.
    Sometimes I look up to the sky
    and see the darting puffs of clouds,
    So many of them, all fluffy and white,
    floating gracefully above,
    As I shade my eyes from glowing rays,
    I
