    SEARCHING FOR CHARLIE

    BOOK THREE

They chose a table with a large umbrella on the sandy beach outside the Incognito. The last rays of the setting sun washed the clouds in shades of pink to orange. The beauty and peacefulness of the setting reflected the contentment both Crystal and Jason were feeling. They ordered margaritas and turned their thoughts outward, to Charlie.

Mark called with some information, Jason said. Unofficially, it appears that the body recovered with the boat wreckage probably wasn’t Charlie.

Crystal gasped, Oh, my god! She felt a flicker of hope that Charlie might be alive.

Jason held her hand and said, I know it’s shocking and leads to a lot more questions. The DNA samples were linked to an arrest record for Matt Porter. Remember, this isn’t official. It doesn’t necessarily mean Charlie is alive. He could have been killed, too, and no remains found. It appears that the remains you buried belonged to Matt Porter. The big question now is ‘how did Charlie know him and what the heck was Matt Porter doing in Charlie’s boat?’

Crystal took a long sip of her drink, deep in thought. She didn’t have an answer to that question. But, what about the lock of hair in her locket? She knew that was Charlie’s. She had clipped it herself. How would that help now?

The boat was leased from Sunset Yacht Sales, with an option to buy. It was several years old but had checked out in safety tests. It was seaworthy and sound. Several things, including leaks in a fuel line, at sea can cause explosions on boats. Those things can happen ‘naturally’ so it’s difficult to prove, in this situation, that the explosion was not accidental. However, he checked with the marina where Charlie kept the boat, and one of the guys there remembered there had been a break-in on Charlie’s boat. Said Charlie checked and couldn’t find anything missing except a few bottles of liquor, that kind of thing. So they all concluded it was someone, maybe even kids, looking for booze or drugs. But, it could have been a cover to distract investigation from any tampering with the boat. Or not. Jason stopped to take a breath and see if Crystal had any questions or thoughts to add.

So the only real pieces of evidence are the pieces of the boat and the body parts they gathered up. That means the DNA is the only conclusive thing we have? Did he find out if Charlie told anyone where he was going to go for the shakedown cruise? Or, what if someone went with him, or what if he wasn’t even on the boat? Did anyone see him board, is there anything? Crystal was grasping for anything they could check out to determine whether Charlie had even been on the boat.

The marina handled the lease so they had a file on Charlie. There was a note in the file dated three days before the explosion. Charlie filled up both tanks and said he was going to Secreto, Rana, and Buena Vista islands to check everything out. Told them he’d be back in a week. There was nothing about anyone going with him. Charlie would have had to fill up again at one of the islands and there should be a record of that. Mark has to physically go to those islands to check that out. I gave him the go-ahead to do that. Apparently, none of this was gone into at the time since it was assumed from the evidence that it was an accident.

Maybe someone will remember Charlie filling up. Remember if anyone was with him. But it’s a long time ago and they see a lot of boats. Crystal was daring to hope that Mark would uncover something useful at one of the islands.

The other thing is this Matt Porter guy. It appears that he was Charlie’s brother. Jason waited for Crystal’s reaction. She hadn’t mentioned Charlie having any family, but he had never asked, either.

His brother?! Crystal seemed genuinely surprised. I knew he had a brother, but Charlie didn’t talk about him much. I didn’t even know his name. Charlie didn’t talk about any of his family. He said they didn’t get along and didn’t keep in touch. None of them came to the funeral, either. A sad look came over her face at the memory.

Yeah, well, it’s not too unusual for families to have trouble getting along with each other, but it sounds like they kept a very distant relationship. We need to follow up on Matt and see what put him and Charlie together here in the islands, especially if they weren’t buddy-buddy.

How long will it take to get back DNA results from Charlie’s hair? Crystal wondered. And then what would we try to match it against?

Mark took it to a lab he knows. Usually it can take months, because of the backlog of samples waiting to be examined. Fortunately his contact can get him results in a week or so. Then the first thing to run a match against would be Matt Porter’s DNA. There should be a familial similarity, if they are related. Maybe something else will come up in the meantime where the DNA would be useful. He didn’t want to speculate to Crystal that part of the remains might be Charlie, but of course it was possible.

The waiter came by and they both ordered seafood gumbo. Crystal thought she might want a piece of their ‘famous’ key lime pie, but they would order that later if they had any room left. She hadn’t lost her appetite over the news, which was a good sign, she thought. "Tomorrow we will
