    SEARCHING FOR CHARLIE

    BOOK ONE

Just another shitty day in Paradise, Jason Holt said out loud, startling himself. With a self-conscious laugh he turned to be sure no one had overheard him. No need, he knew he was alone on the beach. Still, he was relieved to see there was no one near. The rising sun had yet to breach the horizon as its first rays cast crimson spears through the clouds against the deep-blue dawn. His break was over, but he could still enjoy this final sunrise. Turning, he faced into the breeze blowing in from the ocean, the salt and sand gently stinging his face, and began the long jog back to the condo. The sun would be up before he arrived, warming the soft white sand and awakening the tourists. Soon the beach would become a playground for the lucky ones left behind.

Two weeks in the sun and sand had left his body tanned and his mind cleansed. Officially, he was here getting over a broken heart, but it was more of a celebration of his freedom. He had been putting long hours in researching and putting together a proposal for a restaurant he wanted to launch, but Olivia had not been alone during their time apart. She had finally made their looming split official by jetting off with some guy she had been screwing on the side. Not exactly subtle. Jason had moved his stuff into a condo on the beach without shedding a tear of regret. Their relationship had been on the skids for months, and he had intended to end things, but she beat him to it. That was best, from his viewpoint. At least it was a clean break and getting her out of his life had allowed him to focus on the project. Everything had come together this last week. He checked his cellphone for the time. Only three hours before the flight to Miami, he thought, and shoved the phone back into his pocket.

    -----------------------------------

Crystal paced back and forth in the tiny office, turning at the door and retracing her path past the desk, to the storage closet, then back to the door. Each time she came to the door, she peered through its window, looking for signs of life in the adjoining hangar.

The office was tucked into a corner of the metal hangar, a concession negotiated when she leased space for her charter jet. It didn’t come with an outside window, so day and night its only illumination came from the overhead fluorescents. The light didn’t have any life in it, and the framed lithographs on the walls didn’t help. Someday she’d bring in something with some bright colors, but not today.

Ken and Chris should have been here by now. Where the heck are they? Crystal felt a knot of tension growing in her belly as she pictured the disaster that would result if the pilots didn’t show. A client would be here in a little less than two hours and there was so much to do.

She was punching Ken’s number into her cellphone just as he and Chris walked through the hangar door. She managed an upbeat greeting. Hey, Ken, Chris, she smiled, glad you could make it. The guys treated the slight sarcasm as a joke. They knew Crystal pretty well by now.

Sorry to cut it so close, Crystal, Ken said. We’ll be ready to go on schedule. Ken Davis was pretty laid back, except when it came to flying. Then he was all business. Ken was the best pilot flying any of the charters out of Calypso Island, and Crystal felt lucky to have him. He and his brother, Chris, had moved down a couple of years ago, trading the uncertain job security with major airlines for the uncertainty of getting enough free-lance flights together to stay and call it home. He and Chris had done okay, but it seemed like fate when the three met and discovered their mutual dream of starting a charter business.

It was fate, alright, Crystal thought with a frown. She had the money and they had the flying experience. They had started the charter business together about a year ago, and the business had been growing steadily since then. Crystal did most of the advertising and promotion to secure clients, and she flew on board as hostess to be sure the service was done correctly. Clients paying for charter jet service were well-heeled and expected a certain level of attention.

Chris nodded and smiled at her as he turned toward the jet. He would start pre-flight checks while Ken took care of some paperwork in the office.

I’ll leave you to it while I finish up inside, Crystal said over her shoulder to Ken as she followed Chris toward the sleek white jet sitting in the hangar. Her hangar. Sea Blue Charters, Crystal Taylor, owner and operator. It had taken a lot of her inheritance, energy and time for the past year to secure clients, make the lease payments on the jet, and pay hangar rental, but the business was gaining momentum. Crystal had even begun to think about leasing a second, larger jet or adding a small plane for inter-island flights. Sea Blue’s specialty was getting clients from point A to point B in comfort and style. They did it well, and they were discreet. Clients who could afford their service sometimes appreciated privacy above all else, and Crystal knew how to deliver. They had flown several famous rock stars and movie legends in and out of Calypso without fanfare, and their recommendations had delivered more clients to Sea Blue.

The jet was a Citation 5, with a modified interior. It could seat eight, six of them in reclining chairs. The plush leather recliners were complimented by a full-length sofa running down one side of the plane. There was a small galley aft of the pilots’ cabin that could be closed off to give the occupants in the main cabin privacy. During takeoff and landing, Crystal sat on a small jump-seat that was situated in one corner of the galley.

She had completed stocking the wine cabinet and frig, and was checking the in-flight entertainment system when she heard the SUV pull up to the hangar. Already time to go, she thought. She peered across the top of one of the reclining passenger chairs to see a man in his thirties climb out, retrieve a bag from the rear of the vehicle, then hand a wad of bills to the driver.

He was about 6’ tall, wearing a knit shirt, walking shorts, and sandals. His arms and legs were muscular and tanned, and his belly was flat. Impossible to see his eyes through his sunglasses, but he had full lips and sun-streaked brown hair, cropped short. Turning, he seemed to consider the jet in the hangar, and he hesitated, as if deciding whether to go to the Sea Blue office or straight onto the jet. With a firm grip on his bag, he turned and walked toward the tiny office. He wasn’t running late, and Crystal wondered, annoyed, why he had come directly to the Sea Blue hangar instead of the plush reception area in the main hangar, across the tarmac. She preferred keeping her clients away from the nuts and bolts of her operation, conducted from the tiny hangar office. And it gave her time to set the stage for a more professional welcome. This time that wouldn’t be possible, but there was no time to waste on regrets.

Thank god, he’s going into the office, Crystal thought, watching as Jason removed his sunglasses and entered the darkness of the hangar. Ken will hold him off until I can get there. She hurriedly finished the final touches, then carefully descended the steps to the hangar floor and walked into the Sea Blue office to meet her latest client. At least the flight will be interesting today, she thought, thinking about his tanned legs and cute ass.

    -----------------------------------

Welcome to Sea Blue, let me take your bag, Ken greeted Jason cheerily. I’m Ken Davis, one of your pilots on today’s flight. Ken set Jason’s bag down next to the door. Before he could offer Jason a seat, Crystal was hurrying through the door and introducing herself.

Welcome to Sea Blue, Mr. Holt. I’m Crystal Taylor, your flight hostess today. Please have a seat while we get your things settled in the airplane. Would you like a cup of coffee or something else to drink while you wait? Crystal recited her well-rehearsed welcome speech. Meanwhile, her brain was reeling. This was the first guy she had been attracted to since the breakup with Gavin, and she wasn’t prepared. And she was more than a little attracted. This guy was hot and sexy, and they would be together for an hour-plus flight. Keeping this strictly professional might be difficult.

No, thank you. Jason took a seat in one of the two guest chairs and watched as Crystal retrieved his computer bag and headed out the door to the jet. Things just got interesting on a level he wasn’t looking for today. He planned to review and refine his presentation on the flight to Miami. But the truth was he knew it ‘cold’ and was prepared to field any and all questions his audience might throw at him. The extra preparation was just overkill.

He couldn’t help but admire Crystal, though. After all, he was a normal guy, right? And god she was something special. He wouldn’t describe her as beautiful, but she certainly was sexy. When he had to choose between the two, sexy won every time. Especially when it was natural sexiness, which this gal had hands down. She wore her honey-blonde hair pulled back from her face and slightly twisted, caught somehow in back, where a few tendrils fell. More tendrils framed her face, and her long bangs brushed the tops of her brows. She wore makeup, not a lot, just enough to make the best of her features. He had taken quite a mental picture while she was before him in the office, and he sat remembering her tanned arms and the curve of her hips beneath the skirt of her uniform. At least he assumed it was a uniform. He felt a familiar warmth begin spreading through his body. Oh, boy, he wasn’t sure he would be getting any more work done today.

Mr. Holt? Mr. Holt? Excuse me, but if you’re ready, we can board the airplane and depart for your flight to Miami, Crystal said softly. Jason was startled and embarrassed at being caught so deep in thought by the object of his reverie. He quickly nodded his assent and rose to walk to the airplane, saying nothing.

Crystal followed, feeling very off her game. Normally, she would be leading the way to the airplane, not following ten paces behind her passenger. Somehow she couldn’t force herself to take charge quite yet. This second look at Jason Holt reinforced her first impression. My god, the blue eyes on that man, she thought. And those lips, full and sensuous; she could almost feel them against her own. And she hadn’t missed the athletic build and tanned chest beneath the sea green knit shirt. C’mon, keep it together, she silently ordered herself, this is a business so act like it and be professional. With difficulty, she forced thoughts and fantasies about Jason Holt out of her head. Recovering her purpose, she skipped ahead, barely reaching the lowered stairs to the jet ahead of him.

    -----------------------------------

As Crystal moved in front of him, Jason realized with an inward groan that she would be climbing those stairs with her backside swinging tantalizingly before him. He vowed to himself that he would look down at his shoes as his feet climbed the steps, not up to her swaying hips. Lucky for them both he had so little self-control, because halfway up the steps Crystal caught the spike of her left heel on a step, lost her footing, and fell backwards, almost knocking both of them down the stairs. Jason saw it coming and quickly stabilized himself and steadied Crystal before it was too late.

The startled expression in Crystal’s eyes reflected fear of the fall, but her expression quickly became questioning. A jolt, like an electric shock, had
