Over the HORIZON

Throughout the long flight, Katrina didn’t allow herself to think about what lay ahead. Now the plane had landed in Argentina and the nerves were kicking in. She could feel her heart pounding as she made her way to the port to board the ship.

She wasn’t meant to be making this expedition alone. Ben should be here. It was to have been their great adventure, their honeymoon. They knew Antarctica was perhaps a strange choice. Most couples chose romantic beach hideaways or vibrant cities, but they were both fascinated by the idea of visiting the remote, frozen continent at the bottom of the world.

She found her cabin and dumped her luggage on the spare bed. At least I’ll have more space, she thought morosely. Unpacking multiple layers of thermal clothing, she remembered the shopping trip when she and Ben had bought everything they could possibly need.

Her friends had said it was a mistake to make the trip alone – it would be arduous, possibly a little dangerous, but she was determined.
