    Chapter 1

We’re going to crash, we’re going to crash! screamed a female passenger two rows behind Kayli.

The Boeing 747 passenger airplane quickly dropped again, dipped slightly to the right, and then bounced back up. The ‘Fasten Seatbelt’s sign was illuminated and all the flight attendants were securely seated too.

Kayli looked at her watch, just forty more minutes and the plane would be landing at the Salt Lake City International Airport. That is, if the turbulence they encountered didn’t tear the airplane apart first.

The airplane dipped down again and bounced up harder this time, rattling the serving carts inside. The female passenger screamed again with more fear in her voice, followed by the sound of her retching. I hope she used the barf bags the airline provided in the pouch on the seat in front of her, Kayli thought. She didn’t know what was worse, the screaming passenger or the motion sickness she was experiencing. Rummaging through her backpack she found a peppermint candy and her iPod. She peeled the wrapper off of the mint, and plopped it into her mouth. Mint candies always settled her stomach when she got motion sickness, so she was grateful her mom had slipped some into her backpack before she left Albuquerque, New Mexico. She then inserted the earphones into her ears and turned the volume up to drown out the screaming passenger, and then tried to relax.

The four days she spent in Albuquerque with her family had been pleasant. This was her first visit with them since they moved away nearly four months ago. Their new home was beautiful. Her parents had chosen a desert landscape for the front yard with a lot of decorative rocks and cacti in the flowerbeds. The interior was decorated with a Southwestern style. There was more ceramic tile on the floor than carpeting and the furniture had blue, red and brown Aztec designs on them. Although it was filled with some of the furniture she had used in their home in Utah, she realized that this was not her home nor would it ever be. Her childhood home was now a part of her past.

Kayli lay back into her seat listening to another song while her mind wandered. She couldn’t believe how much Alex; her little brother had grown. He was very tall for a ten year old, she thought. He had taken her to all of his new favorite places to hang out, especially the skateboard park where he showed her the new tricks he could do on his skateboard. The tricks he performed made her cringe a few times. He seemed oblivious to the dangers some posed to his safety, it was a good thing he wore a helmet she thought.

She enjoyed the one-on-one time spent with her mom, which was something she missed. When she first arrived in Albuquerque, she and her mom stayed up all night talking. The next day they went shopping at the local mall. Her dad on the other hand, took her on a tour of the plant where he was now working. He was very happy with the move. Kayli couldn’t help but be happy for him and was glad that the new job turned out to be what he had wanted.

The music and peppermint candy had done wonders in helping to pass the time, before she realized it the airplane and female passenger had calmed down considerably. Looking out the window she was awed by the view. They were circling over the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island. The sky was so clear she could see many details in the lake and the island, the colors and landscapes were beautiful. She didn’t realize how big the Island was or how long the causeway was that had been built to make it possible to drive your car out to the island. Thinking back she figured that the last time she was on the island was when her sixth grade class rode their bikes out to it.

The captain’s voice came over the intercom breaking the silence. Folks we are on our final decent and should be on the ground in approximately fifteen minutes. The local time is 5:30pm and the temperature is fifty-one degrees. Thank you for flying with us. Flight attendants please prepare the cabin for landing.

One of the flight attendants announced on the speakers, Please have all tray tables up and seats in their upright positions and all carry-on luggage stowed away. They began to walk up and down the aisle checking seats, trays and luggage and gathering the remaining cups and other trash from the passengers.

Kayli pressed the button on the armrest and the back of her seat returned to its upright position. She put her iPod away and tucked her backpack under the seat in front of her. She was ready for the flight to be over.

Banking to the right then straightening out, the airplane began to approach the runway. The landing gear growled and vibrated underneath the passenger’s feet as it extended out from the bottom of the airplane. Now on a straight course they were fast approaching the runway and began their final decent. Closer and closer the airplane came to the ground and the buildings and cars began to grow in size. The engines roared loudly as the back wheels bumped onto the ground. The front of the airplane dipped down as its landing gear made contact with the runway. The force and speed of the plane slowing down caused several magazines from the back of the airplane to slide down the aisle to the front, as the airplane quickly raced down the runway. The pace of the airplane began to slow down, as the pilot steered the large aircraft over the tarmac to the awaiting gate. Passengers began to stand up in the aisles and remove their luggage from the overhead storage compartments. One by one everyone exited the airplane.

Kayli couldn’t wait to get off of the airplane. Colton was going to pick her up and she was anxious to see him. She could hardly believe that she met him four months ago when she moved in with her Great Aunt Tilly. Colton was renting the studio apartment over the garage and their first meeting was awkward but that was now in the past. Her life had been one adventure after another since meeting Colton, some good and some well, dangerous. These adventures she couldn’t share with her family or friends. They would think she was crazy, especially if she told them about the pirates she had encountered in the old world.

She slung her backpack over her shoulder, exited the airplane and followed the other passengers to the same destination, the luggage claim area. She felt like a cow as it was being herded to a corral but at least at the end of this destination she had more than a trough full of hay to eat, Colton would be there waiting for her.

She was stuck walking behind a slow moving group of people, so she tried to move around them. When she stepped out Kayli was slammed hard from behind. The force was so strong she stumbled and fell to the floor; her backpack slid off of her arm and landed a few feet in front of her.

Excuse me miss, I am so sorry, apologized a man. I didn’t see you, I shouldn’t have been moving so fast.

Kayli looked up. A man in his late twenties leaned down. Here let me help you up. He offered her his hand. Kayli took it and he pulled her back up to her feet. He then picked up her backpack, dusted it off and handed it to her. I really am sorry.

It’s okay, I’m sure it was an accident, she said regaining her balance.

Standing she faced him. He was a good foot taller than her and his brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail and his right ear was pierced with a very large diamond earring.

Are you sure you’re okay miss? I really am sorry, he apologized again.

Yes I’m fine, no harm done. Please don’t worry, accidents happen, she offered.

That they do. If you are alright, I need to get going, he said.

    I’m fine, really.

He put on a baseball cap, held it by the brim, nodded and walked away.

Straightening her jacket, Kayli slung her backpack over her shoulder and continued to walk to the baggage claim area. The walk seemed longer than usual mainly because she hadn’t seen Colton in a week and she was anxious to be with him. She stepped onto the escalator and began the ride down when she saw Colton waiting at the bottom for her.

His black hair was lightly tousled and he was smiling at her. She smiled back and waved, her heart began to beat faster. At the bottom she ran over to him where the two greeted each other with a warm hug and a quick kiss.

It’s good to see you, Kayli smiled as she hugged him tightly.

It’s nice to see you too, he replied. How was your flight? He reached over and took her backpack from her.

The first part was uneventful but we flew into some turbulence over Colorado, she explained. So the last hour was very bumpy and nauseating.

They walked over to the luggage carousel and waited for her suitcase to be unloaded and sent down the conveyor belt.

Well you’re safe on the ground now. He put his arm around her and lightly squeezed her shoulders. I’m glad you’re home.

    Me too.

The carousel began to move and luggage started sliding down a small ramp and onto the carousel. Several suitcases passed by them. Most were black and several were blue or red. I see mine, said Kayli pointing to it. It’s the red one with the green ribbon on the handle.

Colton reached over and pulled the suitcase off of the carousel. He tried to carry both the suitcase and Kayli’s backpack but she insisted on carrying the backpack. They weaved through the crowd of passengers who were waiting for their luggage and exited out the main door. The crisp October air whipped around them as they walked to the parking garage. Kayli could see Colton’s black Porsche parked two stalls over. As they got closer Colton pushed a button on his key ring and the trunk popped open. He put the suitcase into the trunk, and then reached up to close the lid when Kayli stopped him.

Wait, I need to get something first. She reached in and opened the suitcase and pulled out a small white bag. I bought you something from my trip. You can open it in the car.

You didn’t need to buy me anything, he commented with a half smile.

I know but I wanted to. Besides, when I saw it, it reminded me of you.

They got into the car and Kayli handed the package to him. It’s nothing major but I thought you’d like it.

I already do, it’s from you.

Colton opened the package and pulled out a four inch figurine of a coyote that was carved out of wood and painted black. The coyote was sitting with its face up as if it was howling at the moon. Around its neck was a necklace with a turquoise stone hanging from it.

This is very nice, he said as he examined the coyote. It has been a long time since I was given such a nice gift. He leaned over to Kayli and kissed her gently. Thank you.

I’m glad you like it, she blushed. Several minutes passed and she asked, Aren’t you going to ask me why the coyote reminds me of you?

    I am curious, he answered.

This one is dark and mysterious, like you and the blue stone reminded me of your eyes. She crinkled her nose. Now that I said it out loud it sounds kind of silly…

I like it. He grinned then looked at her. So I’m dark and mysterious?

Okay, just let it go, she answered shaking her head.

    Chapter 2

Merging into the traffic on the freeway, Colton glanced in the rearview mirror. Behind them was the same silver Jeep Cherokee that followed them out of the parking garage of the airport ten miles ago. Colton became suspicious when he saw the jeep cut off two other cars while trying to keep up with him.

How are your mom and dad? he asked. Swiftly he moved to the inside of the left lane. The jeep moved to the inside lane as well.

Oh they’re fine, replied Kayli. My dad really likes his new job, he said it’s challenging. He gets bored easily so being busy is good for him.

Has your dad warmed up to the idea that you and I are seeing each other? he asked.

Yes, in fact he asked me to give you a message. He wants you to know that he is less than two hours away and that if your intentions aren’t honorable, he owns a shot gun. She looked at him out of the corner of her eye.

    Colton was grinning. Point taken.

Switching lanes again Colton sped up. The jeep changed lanes too, but slowed down its pace and pulled behind a minivan that was behind Colton.

My mom, Kayli continued. She is very social, so she has already made a bunch of new friends. She’s even thinking of starting up her own business again there.

I didn’t know your mom owned her own business, he commented.

She’s a business consultant and is very good at her job. She ran a very successful business out of our home before they moved.

How about Alex, is he adjusting to the move? Before she could answer he shifted into another gear and sped up crossing into the outside right lane. Looking in the rearview mirror he watched as the jeep moved in behind him.

You’re asking a lot of question about my family She turned and looked at him. Are you really that interested in them? she asked skeptically.

Yes I am. I haven’t met your family and wouldn’t mind getting to know them better and right now it’s by what you tell me.

Well Alex is easy going and funny, she continued. People like to be around him so he always has friends.

Colton interrupted her. Kayli did anything unusual happen on the airplane or while you were in New Mexico?

No just the rough period of turbulence. Why? She thought he was acting funny.

What about when you landed and got off of the airplane, before I met you at the escalator? he persisted. Did anything unusual happen?

Nothing that I can think of, she said then paused. Well there was a man just outside the gate, he bumped into me hard enough I fell down but it was an accident. Why are you asking? She turned in her seat and looked at him. Colton what is wrong?

I want you to turn around and face forward. Make sure your seatbelt is secure. He was gripping the steering wheel with his left hand while his right hand was on the stick shift.

The change in his mood alarmed her. What is going on, she demanded.

Staring straight ahead he stated, Don’t turn around; there’s a silver Jeep Cherokee behind us. They have been following us since we left the airport.

Are you sure? Maybe they are just going north like we are.

No they are definitely following us. Hang on, he warned.

    Colton sped
